Water And Trout Fishing Are Up!

Species: Trout Landlocked Salmon Bass
Location: Shasta Lake,

Recent rainfall on Lake Shasta has kept fisherman to a minimum, although the fishing has continued to be consistent.

Doug Niece of Elk Grove fished Shasta last week trolling for trout and landlocked king salmon and was pleasantly surprised with the fishing that entailed.

"I started the morning trolling Cripplures and Humdingers in the top 20 feet of the water,” he stated. “Right away I had my first fish off a silver shad pattern Cripplure and that was just the start to a great morning," exclaimed Niece. "Before the day was over I had nearly 10 hookups and landed 8 nice trout to 18" with only one fish under 15. These fish are healthy and put up a great fight despite the colder weather conditions."

Other fishermen visiting the lake are finding similar results. The key is to work the surface. The best lure of choice is anything is a shad pattern. The trout have become spread out, so trolling is your best bet by covering as much water as possible throughout the day.

The best bass action has been taking place on cloudy days, since the bass tend to move shallower when the light level is low. When the sky is clear and the sun is high the bass move to deeper water and are going to be more difficult to hook.

Both Senkos and finesse worms rigged on darter heads are taking fish. For a chance at some of those larger bass, try working steep shorelines with 4 to 6 inch soft plastic swimbaits. A few very large bass are always taken during these months so don't be afraid to throw big baits for bigger fish.

At press time the lake was 38 percent of capacity and 940.23 feet above sea level.
