Eight decades ago, the Luhr-Jensen company was born in an unused chicken coop in rural Hood River, Oregon. It was the height of the Great Depression. How does one build a fishing lure business in the middle of a depression? It seemed an insurmountable task.
The answer has now defined Luhr-Jensen for 80 years: build the very best products for their intended application and anglers will seek them out.
Tie on a Kwikfish, Hot Shot, Krocodile, Needlefish or Speed Trap and you're engaging the experience of generations of craftsmen with a deep understanding of the predator-prey relationship and how to motivate fish to strike. They understood your challenges, shared your excitement, and developed the tools that de-mystify success and bring more fish to hand.
With each generation, the details are enhanced. UV Bright finish technology unleashes the science of fish vision upon the most productive lure actions that exist. Each day, each season, each year, the details are scrutinized and collected experience is applied to drive results.
Built upon an unbridled passion for fishing, the Luhr-Jensen name is 80 years young, always learning, always advancing, and maximizing every day on the water.
Trout Lures And Attractors
The elongated thin-blade design of the Needlefish makes it a top performer for trout trolling at all speeds. Hyperactive in nature, the addition of the metal flipper tail, adds a small touch of erratic flash fish can’t resist. The Needlefish is exceptionally effective when fished plain, and also outstanding when tipped with a small piece of worm or Shoepeg Corn. Choose from multiple sizes and extensive finishes to match every fishery. Rig the Needlefish behind a dodger or troll or fish it all alone behind a weight, on lead core line, or off a downrigger.
Start on any high mountain lake. Follow the water through countless rivers that increase in size before finally reaching ocean estuaries. Continue to the beach, pass the near shore structure, and head into the blue water. At any point in the journey you can catch fish on a Krocodile, whether the fish are trout or bass, salmon or stripers, bluefish or calicos, halibut or tuna. It’s been that way for generations. The Krocodile operates on a simple premise: big fish eat smaller fish. Year in and year out, the Krocodile proves itself to be the most productive spoon ever built. It can be cast and retrieved, jigged over structure, or trolled. Choose from more the size that best mirrors available forage, then pick the perfect finish from an extensive palette.
In the world of trout fishing, if there ever was an “America’s Lure” it may very well be the Super Duper. Its unconventional “U” shaped design catches water and creates a swimming action game fish find irresistible. Equally effective cast or trolled on light line, the Super Duper will take trout, bass and panfish. A deep selection of finishes assures the Super Duper will perform on your local waters.
With the slender silhouette of a darting minnow and a high-vibration action to sell the illusion, the Kokanee King’s productivity is rivaled only by the world-class Needlefish. A metal flipper tail gives off sound, vibration and glimmers of light as it shimmies through the water. Add a mealworm, single piece of Shoepeg corn, or a small piece of worm to the hook for maximum effectiveness. With a host of available finishes, the Kokanee King is a staple lure on any Western reservoir.
Same proven design as the venerable needlefish in a smaller size that’s highly attractive to Kokanee. Metal flipper tail improves performance at slow troll speeds while increasing the lure’s vibration at all troll speeds.
Bang-Tail spinners work better because they’re designed better. Featuring a built-in swivel that virtually eliminates line twist and a proprietary “instant-spin” blade design for instantaneous blade start-up on the retrieve. Bang-Tail spinners can be fished straight upstream (unlike many) as well as crosscurrent and downstream in rivers. You’ll also notice the blades are thicker, producing a stronger vibration, and less likely to incur damage if bounced off a river rock or hammered by a large fish. With multiple sizes and a full color palette, there is a “Bang-Tail” to meet the demands of every water condition.
Beer Can Troll
The Beer Can Lake Troll is a favorite of the most serious trolling anglers. Counter-rotating blades tame line twist while producing outstanding vibration. Extra-wide blades, featuring premium plating and polish, pulse with high-impact flash to draw fish in from long distances. Beer Can Lake Trolls are an excellent choice on large bodies of water and/or deeper depths. Integrated trolling rudder included.
The “Cowbell” is our most popular lake troll and perhaps the most productive troll in the world. Its unique blade design produces an awesome fish-calling vibration while Luhr-Jensen premium plating and polishing of the blades offer maximum flash. You’ll draw fish from greater distance, and produce more strikes with Cowbell trolls in your spread. Cowbell trolls come completely rigged with flexible cable rigging, trolling rudder and a selection of blade sizes and troll length. With multiple sizes and a host of proven finishes, you’ll be sure to maximize success on your local waters.
Ford Fender Troll
Originally fashioned in the 1930’s from the headlight reflector of a Model A Ford, few fishing products in the world have as glorious a history as the Ford Fender Lake Troll. Trolled at slow speeds, the Ford Fender produces maximum flash and vibration that draws fish from extremely long distances. Experiment with distances of 18” to 48” between the Ford Fender and trailing lure as sometimes fish come right to the troll and other times they like the lure back a bit further. Needlefish, Super Dupers, small Hot Shots and similar are all excellent lure choices behind a Ford Fender.
Jeweled Bead Troll
The easy-pulling design of the Jeweled Bead Troll makes it a great addition to the light-tackle angler’s arsenal. Luhr-Jensen’s premium plating and polishing produces maximum flash from the #3 blades, simulating a school of small minnows. Four blades are fully rigged on flexible cable rigging and feature jeweled bead spacers for a small shimmering effect that gets noticed. Follow the Jeweled Bead Troll with a Kokanee King or Kokanee Needlefish tipped with a single piece of Shoepeg Corn for outstanding results for outstanding results on Western kokanee.
Jensen Trout and Kokanee Dodger
At just shy of 4-inches in overall length, the Jensen Trout and Kokanee Dodger is the perfect attractor for trout and kokanee. Its sharp side-to-side swimming motion provides a lively presentation to trailing spoons, flies and small squids. Luhr-Jensen premium plating and polishing assures a long service life and maximum flash.
Salmon and Steelhead Lures
Before “back-trolling” in rivers became an official technique, it was called “Hot Shotting” for the revolutionary lure that would forever alter steelhead fishing. With its compact body, deep-diving bill and quick, wide and aggressive action, the Hot Shot has become a staple of steelhead, trout and salmon anglers alike. Primarily backtrolled for river steelhead and salmon, the smaller sizes are outstanding as trolling lures in lakes or drift-fished lures in streams for trout. For trout, fish them behind a lake troll or flat line them far behind the boat on lakes, cast them cross-current and allow them to swing through likely holding spots on rivers. “Tune” each lure for maximum success by making small adjustments to the screw-eye line attachment (if the lure runs to one side, slightly rotate the top of the screw eye in the opposite direction). In any application, brace yourself for savage strikes.
Kwikfish (K-14, K-15, K-16)
It’s not very often that a lure becomes so completely attached to the fish it’s intended to catch as the Kwikfish has become to salmon. Its wide, thunderous action provokes awe inspiring, vicious strikes from king salmon when slow trolled, backtrolled behind a Jet Diver, or anchor fished in running current. Commonly wrapped with a sardine fillet for extra attraction (see Tech Reports), tune Kwikfish by turning the screw eye line attachment in small increments until the lure swims straight. For steelhead, concentrate on sizes K-9X through K-13X. Larger salmon sizes also make excellent downrigger lure for big lake trout. Fish a Kwikfish and discover why it has become the first name in salmon fishing.
Kwikfish Xtreme (K-9X, K-11X, K-13X, K15X)
Xtreme series Kwikfish bring a whole new level of performance to the most productive lure family in the history of salmon fishing. “X” series Kwikfish feature side-to-side body molds, fixed eyelets and a deep-diving design that targets water to a full 15-feet in depth without incorporating divers or lead weights. Xtreme series Kwikfish provide a more balanced, yet still aggressive, swimming action and are both easier to use, and more versatile than the standard series lures. Fish the K-9X and K-11X in trolling or back-trolling applications for steelhead and Coho salmon. The K-13X makes an incredible crossover lure for very large steelhead (or dirty water environments), Coho and King Salmon. The K-15X is the staple size for Kings from California to Alaska.
Computer-controlled molding is the secret to the tournament winning Speed Trap. The process creates a very thin-walled, high-action body, which produces maximum vibration while offering incredible balance. This crankbait will not roll over at any speed. Work it slow or burn it over shallow cover, presenting the bait to the maximum number of fish. Pros have referred to the Speed Trap as the “Limit Getter” for its ability to cover water quickly and effectively. A pros quote in Bassmaster magazine explained, “It’s a great search bait. I always have one tied on when I go to a lake I’ve never been before. It’s a confidence thing. I can cover water fast and learn which areas hold bass.” Dive depths for the 1/8- and 1/4-ounce models are 5 and 8 feet respectively. For targeting fish in deeper haunts, check out the Hot Lips Express.
Hot Lips Express
If you’re tired of trying to fish crankbaits
deep only to realize your bait is actually in the strike zone for just a moment, it’s time to tie on a Hot Lips Express. Our Deep Dive Tri-Lobe Power Lip dives with a near vertical descent, reaching target water fast, and staying there through the bulk of the retrieve. Crank it down, then work it slow, bumping it over submerged points, breaks, and river beds with productivity you’ve never experienced before. A favorite bait of professionals, the Hot Lips Express opens an incredible quantity of structure to crankbait techniques. The three sizes of Hot Lips Express will dive 12-16 feet (1/4 ounce), 15-18 feet (1/2 ounce) and 18-24 feet (3/4 ounce).
The Jet Diver’s unique, buoyant design captures water pressure against its wings to dive, yet when pressure is relaxed, the Jet Diver will float off of structure. The preeminent diver for river back-trolling applications, the Jet Diver enables the presentation of lures and baits tight to the river bottom where most fish are found, without getting hung-up in this difficult environment. Trollers incorporate Jet Divers as controlled-dive tools that are highly capable of bumping over bottom structure, and floating free should they become stuck. Five sizes target water depths from less than 10- all the way to 50-feet deep.
Deep Six and Double Deep Six
Diving with a steep angle of descent to reach fish quickly and with comp
lete control, Deep Six and Double Deep Six divers are beloved by West Coast salmon anglers. The key to the diver’s success is an adjustable, positive trip mechanism that can be set to handle the strongest currents and fastest troll speeds, while still tripping on the strike or manually tripped by the angler for easy retrieves. Double Deep Six models feature double the keel weight than standard models, providing the fastest and deepest dives short of a downrigger.
