Sturgeon Virgins - NO MORE!!!

I've been lurking on the site for some time posting here and in the trout and striper boards from time to time. I've learned so much about sturgeon fishing by just reading, and after many day and night trips, it has finally paid off.

My brother and I have been in search of sturgeon since November, and all we've had to show were shakers from 18" to 40". We havn't fished for sturgeon for the last three weeks, so we decided to try our luck on Sunday March 8.

We met up at my sister's house and headed towards Pittsburg to fish the cuts. On the water by 9:30 and in the little cut around 10. Sat in the wind and chop for about an hour and decided to try Garnet point. we slowly made our way towards Garnet and set anchor. 20 mins later, my rod gets a tap. I get ready to set but I miss the bite. Another 5 mins go by and I see the same tap and set the hook on the second tap and feel something heavy, FISH ON!!! After a good battle, some panicing, and my dad yelling for the w h o r e (oar, he's Filipino with an accent), we get the fish along side the boat for a measurement. 62"!!!! My first keeper and PB fish ever.

The fish bit on 3 moth old lamprey eel and ghost shrimp. I take my leader off and set it on the engine cover, and my dad takes the remaining pieces of eel and puts it on his hook. The tide turns from ingoint to out going and 5 mins into the outgo, my dad asks me if his rod is getting bit. I look up and tell him, "Set the hook!!!" He sets and the fish makes a huge splash. We all scream "WHOA!!!" Another 15 mins later and another keeper in the boat at 63", my dad's PB ever. Hi fives all around. We fish another hour or so and decide to head in with our heads held high.

Reply #3 - Mar 9^th, 2009 at 6:31pm We were up pretty late cleaning and filleting those two fish last night. We got home around 8, but didn't start cleaning fish til about 10. Finishg around 12. We followed Bass Jack's method, and it was very helpful. A piece was cooked last night in tempura batter, and it was really good.

Hello sniffers. I'm Mark's brother and also til now I've been a lurker Wink

I told my bro that the day I bring a keeper sturgy to the boat, I would come out of the lurking closet and post. Well he beat me to it. I have to say that we owe a lot to all the info we've learned here on the board.

Anyway, getting two 50 lb. sturgeon to the boat even if it's not on your rod is cause for celebration... It's great when your team finally wins!
