Go to the State of Alaska website and check the fish and game sites, they are listed by region, Ketchikan is in the Southeast.

They update the info throughout the season, limits, closures, etc.

Good luck.

A co-worker of mine was up there in the begining of July and at that time it was only 1 Halibut limit per day. Not sure how many you are allowed in posession. Good luck with the fun fighten Silvers.  Wink

Self Guided halibut is 2 a day, but on a charter its 1 a day.

September is a little late for halibut but talk to Ben of the 'Ben Fishin' or Brad from alaskan wilderness charters...they fish out of Clover Pass, the next marina over and brought in lotsa big 'uns. Brad had a day of 5 over 100 and 2 over 200 and Bens biggest this year was is 247 so far.

Septembers a great time for Silvers, theyre all over. They bight really light at that time though so you have to pay attention. Most people troll their Diver/Weight (or if you have downriggers) to their flasher or dodger then 18" or so to a cutplug herring. You can have a hootchie on their too, it always worked better for me  Wink .

Another thing me and my buddy discovered is jigging white/pearl tube jigs with a small piece of herring for scent worked just as well as trolling, and it seemed a little more fun. Just if you wanna try it...

Are you going to get your fish processed?

Have fun and good luck!

I dont know if you've already got a plan to get your fish done for you, but if you dont check out clover pass resort. Its just the next marina over and it'd be no problem for you to drop your fish off on your way back to knudson and they'll get it cut washed vacuum packed and it'll be frozen, boxed and be ready for us ship or for you to take on the plane the day you leave!

Tell them Ryder sent you and theyll take good care of you and your fish  Wink.

Have fun,

Hey Dr K!  I sent a pm and asked when you would be in the Ketchikan area- guess now I know....

Sore-mouth a couple for me!..... Sad

There have been a lot of fish in Herring Cove I'm told, but my source has had to duck a few flying spinners in order to get to the fishing... Cheesy that cove can be a great spot, but it can be a dangerous place, too...

I think herring cove is a terminal fishery. When the hatchery up the creek there gets x amount of fish they open it up to snagging and a bag limit of 6 kings.

I lived in Ketchikan for quite some time, and go up there for the Coho every September.

September is definitely the best month, and the limit is 6 per day.  I keep a Duroboat up there, and launch out of Ward Cove, which has a public launch.  The rig I use is very simple.  I use a one ounce sliding crescent weight on the mainline above a quick change swivel.  I slide the sinker onto the mainline, followed by a rubber bumper, and a bead to protect the knot to the swivel.  Then I use a 3-4 foot leader (10 lb test is fine), with a small herring helmet type rig.  It's important to use the smallest herring possible (4-5 inches).  Many people use too much weight, too much gear, and herring that are Waaaay to big.  If I am catching too many fish too fast, I will switch to a green coyote spoon, which will slow down the catch rate, and will yield bigger fish.

Fish around Pup Island, and stay sheltered from the wind in protected areas.  Coho do the same, and will follow you into these types of areas.

Lastly, forget about Halibut or King Salmon in the Ketchikan area.  There are little to none of these, because it's inside waters.  It's just a waste of time  The Coho in this entire area are terminal fish, planted by the commercial guys (they plant HUGE numbers of them).  99% of them have nowhere to spawn, and remain in the terminal saltwater areas..  If variety is needed, fish Ward Creek for Coho, or Dolly Varden.

If still more variety is needed, go uptown and get drunk.  There are plenty of places that can supply your needs in this regard as well.
