I always tip for good service. A guide may be an independent contractor but he still has mouths to feed. If he is good and his service is appreciated let him know.

There was that tip about the W. Carson. Wink Grin

I myself have my own business where I do private soccer training and i set my own prices, and no one tips me and I'm considered an independent contractor... however I dont feel anyone should tip me, because I set my price to where it needs to be.

With that being said I have always tippped all of my good guides and deckhands.. It doesnt matter if its a tuna boat in SD, alaska charter, or a salmon or striper trip here. If that guide is good and works his butt off then I will tip no matter if we caught fish or not. Especially if I'm having my guide clean and fillet my fish. I have had one guide refuse a tip because I let him keep all the roe from our salmon and he said that it was an even trade.

I say if you want good service then stop being a cheap azz and show some appreciation.
I will agree though that charging $400 is stupid cause we all know it doesnt cost that much to go fishing

My plumber is an independent contractor.  But, I sure as heck won't tip him.  Good service or not.

That's not considered 'The Service Industry'.

This is sort of a two edged sword. If the guide worked FOR a tackle shop as an employed guide, then a tip is ABSOLUTELY necessary. If he is self employed as a guide (like a plumber), the toke may not be necessary, but certainly it is appreciated.

Generally speaking, people in the service industry DON'T make a living on their wage. They make it on their tokes. And the reason being.....the employer understands that people are expected to tip for his employees services.

Now the sex industry is a bit different.... Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley
