Berryessa Largemouths 10/19 & 20
Oct 20th, 2009 at 11:25am

New to bass fishing but saw the best action I've seen in the couple months since I've really been trying for a nice bass.

Went out last night for the late bite before dark for about an hour, and hit a nice largie looked like 2 lbs or so on a watermelon brush hog. I was essentially fishing it topwater rigged texas-style but with a very small split-shot on the nose instead of a bullet sinker, with a nice even retrieve at a good speed but not too fast. I'd let it sink occassionally but nothing like you'd normally work a texas rig. I also hit a  1 lb or so bluegill soaking a nightcrawler and bagged me some dinner.

This morning about 8 am I headed out with my buddy again to nail another decent largie (3+ lbs.) in about 45 min of fishing. This time off a Purple & Green Special FX Roboworm on a jighead like you'd use for a crappie. Same sort of action with the worm, and the hit from this morning's bass as well as last night's came on the first action I gave the worm after one of the few rests I gave each retrieve. Also hit a smaller large same setup about the length of the distance from the tip of your middle finger to the center of your palm, nothing exciting. But there were more bites that weren't hooked, so the fish are definitley back in shallower waters and biting aggressively. I have a feeling the new moon's influence and recent weather change didn't hurt the bite either. I also bagged a 5-7 lb cat soaking some bacon while I worked my lures. Action all over and this is all from one cove on the south shore.

Bass are back up top for shoreline anglers and boaters alike. If you live in the area, get up here and get on this bite. If I'm catching these 2-3 lb fish there has got to be bigger ones coming in. I'm gonna try spinbaits and other topwater lures next week for the first time on this lake. Fish on everyone!

Since I just figured out a way to get images from my cell phone camera to my computer without a USB cable, I'll post the pics from the other day now. The picture that's from farther off is the larger bass.

Nice detailed report. Congratulations on some nice size bass this time of year, not to mention a hog of a catfish.

lots of good info!  nice fish.  I was thinking about going to folsom on Wed/28th but will instead hit up berryessa based on your reports.  I love both bass and cats and sounds like i will probably tear them up.  Looking for a partner to help with gas and launching.  I have a 17' bass boat with a 150Yamaha, are you interested in going out on Wed??  Let me know.

I've been checking my shoddy fish identification skills and have realized that both of those fish were probably smallmouths from what I can tell in the pics. What do y'all think?
