Fishing charts
Oct 23rd, 2009 at 8:18am

Does anyone here believe in the fishing charts that list the best days and times to catch fish? I try to keep an eye on these but I don't see any validity in them. Sometimes the charts seem like they work, but a lot of t imes they don't. I know the weather trumps everything, but even with stable weather, I still get the same conclusion. And while I'm on this subject, does anyone go by a barometer? How valid is that?

I have had some success with this one.

I really don't pay much attention to any of them, when I get a chance to fish, I just go fishing!

I definitely don't pay attention to the charts. I think the barometric pressure does come into play if it drops low enough, especially if it does it in a short period of time. I think that there are more important factors to worry about like fishing pressure, moon schedules (night fishing) and what the bass are feeding on at the time. My favorite time to fish is on a new moon, Wed.-Thurs. night, light breeze, 50 degree water temps and overcast skies.

The only chart I go by, "if your line is not in the water your not going to catch any fish!" Grin I do believe that moon phase has a lot to do with the night bite.

I think there's a thread linked in the FAQs written up by a guy frustrated with just this question. He tracked his fishing catch numbers and time, among other variables, and came to the conclusion that three factors were most important: 1)rise and set times of the sun; 2) rise and set times of the moon; 3) the phase of the moon. When these three things line up, the fishing is best, so the theory goes. When the rise and set of the sun and moon fall closely together, and this occurs within a four day or so window around the new or full moon, you have your optimal fishing/hunting.

I don't know that this is the whole picture, but since reading the article I spoke of, I've been having more success in those timeframes. Check out the thread.

As some said though, I have noticed that the weather.com reports are fairly accurate.

I sometimes refer to this chart also, mostly when it comes to lakes.  When it comes to fishing, no chart can tell you when you'll catch more fish.  But it is nice to know the tides to limit down to where the fish are located.

My father always said a steady barometer was better for fishing. I like fishing in storms and have had SOME success in doing so. The solunar charts are well described above in brief by berry..... I will say this in support of the charts. When you are fishing near a peak time in the solunar guides take a look around. If there are cattle in the hills they will be active and feeding. I checked this on several occasions and its true. Watch the cattle and you will see.
