Bass on...anchovies?
Oct 29th, 2009 at 11:23am

Was wondering if anyone has ever accidentally hit a bass while soaking cut fish baits? I was fishing last night for bass with a couple lines in the water soaking anchovies and mackerel for cats, and a decent sized 17 inch smallmouth picked my anchovy up and hooked himself while I was working my lures. I was absolutely astounded. I'd been told by people before that a bass won't pick up soaking baits, except worms and such, especially a piece of anchovy that has been thawed and refrozen for multiple trips and has become stinkier and less fresh every time.

Anyone had an experience like that before?

Back in college years ago, I worked on a project where we set up a trot line on a small creek- we caught a 14" smallmouth on a piece of chicken liver....

Why not!  I catch everything on a bass lure, sooooo, why not.  I think that a bass will bite almost anything, especially if it is moving.

And here I am, thinking that I was the only person who had done the same as you did.  Yes, I landed a 2 lbs largemouth bass while fishing for catfish in the river somewhere in July this year.  I was using crawdad meat and I never thought a bass would be in such fast moving water.  No lies.

Yes brother.  On 2 separate occasions while soaking anchovies for stripers I have caught 2 LMB.  Both around 15 inches.

I had a buddy catch at 2lb LMB while dragging in his carp rigged shredded wheat bait ball, weird ain't it.  Then a month ago my other buddy in stockton casted out a frozen full anchovie in the river and caught a 6lber.  I was like, what the fudge.  I'd like to think that LMB like fresh bait and not 3 month old rottening stink bait.  But yeah, it happens.

My guess is, everyone who caught a LMB off dead bait caught it either right after they cast or when the bait was in some current, making the bait move around.  There's no way a LMB will pick up a piece of corn off the bottom but could be fooled if the corn was moving on the end of a tippet.

If it turns out I'm wron, I guess I'll be soaking salmon eggs at the pond the next time I'm looking for ye old bigmouth.  Tongue

I think this just illustrates that for all the well-established patterns we have for catching specific fish, you still never know what you're gonna hook.

Fishing is badass.

I caught a 3 lb LMB on pink powerbait when I was a kid. Had it sitting on the bottom of camp far west hoping SOMETHING would bite. guess it worked.
