Thinking of setting up a pair of downriggers on my 21' Seaswirl topaz.

I know there is manual & electric. Any recommendations or advice on type and kind? Number of downriggers, type of booms, telescoping vs. regular, etc.

Planning to troll on lakes & ocean. Would there be a difference in setups?

Thanks in advance!

Decided to get out this Monday and do some bank fishing.
Picked up a dozen blood worms and some livers/sardines to use for pike minnow bait. Was at my spot and had poles in a little before 7am. Few shaker bites on blood worms and lots of little fish trying to catch the pike. Then I got a bite on my liver and it started pulling line. Ended up lading a 21" striper on my wally world special pole. Few hours and a few more shakersgo by and I get a good hit on my blood worm. Set the hook and the reel starts screaming. Fought it for a couple minutes and then it just came unhooked. After a few choice words for the fish, I tossed my bait back in. Little bit later got another hit and got this one in. A nice 24" that was left to fight another day because I wasn't done fishing yet. I finally got a pike and tossed it out with no luck. I fished for a couple more hours until the tide turned and water went slack for a while.

After the success Monday I decided to head back out Tuesday.
Hit the bait shop again around 6am for another dozen blood worms. Got to my spot and had small fish action right away. After weeding through a handfull of shakers, got a nice hit and swung. Fish started running and I could tell it had some weight to it. Got this one in and ended up being a nice 27"er. Few more shakers later and called it a day again when the tide went slack for a few hours.

They are still in the system boys and girls, go get some!

26 Coho landed, 22 released in the water, biggest to 1# 14oz and 1# 12 oz, 1 LDR, 2 SDRs, 15 hit/no stick, 5 doubles. My lucky dog, Spike, joined me for a SIR/Jolly Hookers Fishing Club Derby at Oroville. 30 Hookers and guests weighed-in 125 fish. We launched at the Spillway ramp. Spike and I spent all day trolling at 1.4-1.6 mph. Virtually all of our fish were caught at 22’ down on the downrigger. All were caught on a two-hook green Koke-A-Nut or green hoochie behind a silver & green or silver 4/0 dodger. The Koke-A-Nut and dodger had some herring or anchovy gel and a small piece of herring or anchovy on the trailing hook. We trolled the bridge area most of the day. 6.5 hours (6:30-1), 14 miles. After fishing we had our weigh-in and shore lunch. The top four fishermen were myself in 1st with the 1# 14 oz fish, Jim Bush 2nd 1# 11 oz, Wayne Gates 3rd 1# 10oz and Criste Silverio 4th 1# 10 oz. Milo Tubbs and Tom Grube hosted the other Hookers to a shore lunch of super big grilled hots dogs with all the fixings, chili, chips, dessert, soda & water. Great job Milo & Tom! Water 66.6-68.2*, clear to 10’ down, no debris. Air 58-84*. Sky clear. Wind 0-5 (mainly 2) mph. Sunrise 6:00, 30% moon visible. Thanks for the company Spike, you were a very lucky dog today!

P.S. For those readers who don't know, SIR stand for Sons in Retirement, and is a large social club of retired, nearing retirement men. A member of SIR can join our fishing club which meets once a month for breakfast, and has outings every month to northern CA lakes, the delta and the ocean. Other SIR activities include golf, bowling, walking, travel, dining, etc.. If you are interested in joining us, give me a call at 916-979-9589. See you out there.

I looking to stay under $40 for one. Preferred to be picked up from a retail store close to Sacramento. I saw a few different make and models at

Sportman's Warehouse
6640 Lonetree Boulevard
Rocklin‎ CA‎ 95765

Price range of $20 - $35 I would also use the hat for camping and hiking.

Guys and Gals,
I am a very long time lurker, first time poster.
My friends and I were fishing Lake Tahoe from Cave Rock and Sand Harbor launches last Thursday (5/11/12) - Saturday (5/13/12) and caught a few fish. I thought all of you would like to see some of the pictures.

After having the boats inspected in Meyers, we launched out of Cave Rock @ 10:30.
While letting out line from Sam's boat, with a classic AC plus (rainbow Trout Pattern), just outside the launch area Bob hooks up. After a fine fight, they subdued the 39" Mac into their undersized net.
Needless to say, we were all stoked!

<a href="http://www.fishsniffer.com/attachments/mackinaw-board/10673d1337138460-macs-east-shore-tahoe-2-big-ones-img_2143.jpg" title="Name: IMG_2143.jpg
They tried to revive it, but were unable to get it to swim away, so it was kept.

Fishing was a little slow after that, with Sam loosing one, and Gordon finally landing a nice fish on my boat on a #11 Rapala (Black over Gold). We estimated the fish to be @ 8#. This one we released.

Friday we launched at Sand Harbor as soon as they opened. Fishing was also a tough. Gordon landed a 10# fish early and Doug caught one too. Both on Sam's boat and both on AC Plugs. I think they were using downriggers @ 35' of water.

Late in the evening, Mike finally hooked up on my boat with a nice 15#er that won the daily derby at the last hour!
The fish fell for a Black Dot Frog Lyman, 15' on the wire in 45' of water

Saturday was to be short day for half the crew. Just before it was time to pull the lines for the early team to leave, we were trolling off a shallow shoal in front of the Sand Harbor launch. Andy's rod doubles over HARD on the back of my boat. He could barely get it out of the rod holder and the fight was on!
The old AC plug was only 15' on the wire and when I checked the finder to see the depth we had come off the shoal and were in 85' of water. I guess the fish had come up from the depths to get the lure and was now determined to return to the bottom. Line was screaming off the reel and Andy was holding on for dear life. As soon as the fish stopped, Andy started to work him back up. The way the rod was bent it looked like he was fighting a large Halibut.
About 10 minutes into the fight, with the deck clear, we can finally see the beast in the clear Tahoe water. With Andy applying as much pressure as he dared to the 12 pound test line, he worked the fish near the boat and I netted him on the first stab.
The fish hit the deck like a large salmon.
In my excitement, I cut his tongue removing the hook, but that looked to be the only injury it had.
We could not believe the size of the fish we had just landed and both knew we wanted to send him back to the lake.
I took out a small tape measure and measured his length at 43 inches.
Then it was time for a few quick photos and to attempt the release.

Screen Shot 2012-05-15 at 8.23.15 PM.jpg
About that time, Sam showed up in his boat thinking we were at the launch to meet them to exchange people that had to leave for home. It was great to have them show up to share in our once in a lifetime catch.
We gently held the fish over the side, he slid out of my hand without much need for help, and slowly returned to the depths of the big blue lake.
Sam took this photo of the release.
After they left, we managed to catch one more Mac. This fish was about 4#. This fish was really the size fish I was expecting to catch when we started, but did not draw much excitement after the ones we had landed over the last few days.

Sam called me from the road to tell us that when they looked up the lake record on his iPhone. The record was a 44" fish that weighed 37.6 pounds and caught in 1974.

When we landed our beast we knew it was a giant, but had no idea we were holding a Record Class fish.
Had we known, we would have taken more exact measurements of length and measured the girth. We would have taken many more photos. I do not know if the fish had spent much more time on board the boat, if it would have swam away so easily. We did get some measurements and photos, so I guess that was just fine.

Anyway, that is our story. Since it is my first attempt at posting, I hope the pictures come out.

See you on the water.

Hey all, quick update on my fishing this year thus far. Total trout for 2012: 109.

For the opener, we hit the east side. it was good, caught a lot of fish, no huge ones. we talked to a man who has used a rapala countdown brown trout lure for 35 years and always catches fish, he has caught many record-holding fish for the river, although they may not be in place currently. He says over the 35 years on this river, he has never caught a fish under 12 inches. He let me do one cast at the big antelope valley hole, and pulled in a 16 incher.

We will go up again to the sierras this weekend near tahoe, as in my other post.

For shadow cliffs, we went sunday, and I caught 15 trout using white power eggs and my secret sauce. We were the only ones catching alot of fish, and I missed at least 7 hits, one of which snapped my line and bent my rod almost parallel to the water. I ended up keeping three 2 pounders, and then fileted them, and cooked some amazing trout. Message me for the recipe, it is a great one.

I want to get out to shadow cliffs once more before the heat comes.

Now sniffers, which do you prefer, river/stream fishing, or lake fishing?

I feel rivers the action is definitly a lot better, but the fish generally tend to be a smaller than in lakes. this is more of a quality vs quantity thing, although I have caught plenty a big fish in rivers.

Lakes, however, I get more of an excitement when I see the bobber in between the eyes of my rod go up, and I rush over to the rod, and wait till i feel the tug, and set the hook.

Sorry for the essay, just an interesting thing I noticed.

Fish On to all,
