About Steelhead
Summer run steelhead enter the rivers from June through September but their eggs are immature and they do not spawn until the spring.
Fishing Methods: The most important thing to remember when fishing for steelhead is to fish where the fish are! Steelhead hold in the tailouts of pools and in runs 3 to 6 feet deep. They will commonly hold at the shallower edges of deep pools. If there is cover, such as a large rock, steelhead will use it. They will less frequently be found holding in white water or at the bottom of deep pools.
When the water runs clearer and shallower, lighten up the tackle and reduce the size of the bait or lure. In very clear low water you may have to resort to 4 pound test and tiny lures. Unless fishing in high cloudy water, lure or baits should be no larger than .75oz.
The best baits are ghost shrimp, mud shrimp, and salmon roe. The most common of a near endless list of lures are: Spin-N-Glos, Hot Shots, Wee warts, Rooster Tails, Little Cleos, and Krocodiles.
When fishing, keep your lure or bait close to the bottom!
