You can't put it any simpler or better than that. Well said Glen.
I was told that if you miss one weekend it puts you about a month behind the rest of the crowd. I don't know if I buy it completely but I can tell a difference when I miss a week. You can't learn sitting on the couch. Get out there and fish.
I have to partially disagree with you there bro. I have never fished with any other angler who knew anything. I learned everything I know while sitting and reading (books, forums, email, etc), then of course I took it from there to the water.
Still though, $40 on books and a weekend on the couch reading will answer some major questions for a beginning angler, plus you then have those resources to refer to in the future for whatever reason. *
I am 100% in favor of reading and research.

Agreed. There is so much great info to be had especially on the internet. Obviously there is no replacement for time on the water but you can definitely learn by reading. I have personally learned a ton by reading and talking to guys on the internet.

I prefer to fish baits that can cover more ground in a shorter period of time. Slow working a dropshot just doesn't hold my attention for very long. Also, this time of year especially, baits like frogs, swimbaits, lipless cranks and topwater plugs are better bets for larger fish and are a blast to catch fish with.
When I was using the dropshot rig, I was always catching fish but the quality wasn't the same as with the larger and more aggressive baits.
When fish are sluggish in cooler water, the dropshot is probably one of the better bets. But when fish are hitting aggressively in warm water, I just don't see the need for it.
I think the biggest reason I don't use it much anymore is because I used it so often for so long. Like the old addage says, bigger baits, bigger fish.

There you go again thinking you can only fish a dropshot with a slow presentation. * *;D

Re: best technique for fishing?
Best technique is what you have confidence in. New techiniques that catch fish for you become confidence techniques. Go with what you know and when that doesn't work, try something different. A good technique for Bob may not be a good technique for Joe. Read, watch video, study, and fish with someone who is better than you.

Re: best technique for fishing?
There is too many factors that we all can get into. Barometer, moon phases, color, depth, time of the year etc. But I say find a nice spot with some underwater structure, access to deep water, and baitfish. Fish it SLOW with plastic worms (t-rigged, dropshot, wacky or whatever) or a jig and pig, and maybe you will catch that pig were all looking for. Presenting that bait to that stubborn fish is most important (along with the spot your fishing). So I guess a little experience would help too.

I will say this one more time. The best method to catch a trophy is to fish SLOW. As for it being boring, I'd say that the most boring method is the one that is not catching.
Depth and speed control are the two most important factors. I have caught many TOADS "ripping" a 10" Smoke Rebel with a flourescent red belly in the wind at Lake Isabella. That is speed control on the other end of the needle!! I have caught Toads at Hodges with a SLOW (enough) to make willow leaf blades barely spin! I have caught Toads at Casitias on live Dads on light line ie 6lb just letting them crawl. I have seen Toads chasing live trout come out of the water making Shamoo look like a piker. Toads at Railroad Canyon on jigs with a simple vertical drop!! It is the fish boys and if you think different well...remember depth and speed control are the key to successful fishing!!
