There are a lot of big fish caught out of that same spot (right at the launch). I caught a 10, and many others below 10 pounders. Reason is that at that time of the year, the trouts are released in that area and so the large mouths will come around there to feed.

Re: Rancho Seco?
Wacky a watermelon with red or purple flake Senko at it. That should not fail you... Oh, if that failed, use live nitecrawler hook to the head only. If that fails, have a beer and sit back.

I don't know what the deal is with me and that little lake. I have fished it several times since first trying it when I was a teenage in the late '70s. Some of you are probably muttering "guy doesn't know how to catch bass"....trust me....I do....at least to some extent. But for whatever reason Rancho Seco and I are on different wavelengths. I would usually try it in the spring, and I do remember being somewhat "put off" by the extremely clear water. I also remember wishing I could reach the structure just out of casting distance from the dam....but none of that changes the fact that I have never caught a fish there.
I know the bass are there....I have heard too many reports from different people to believe otherwise....so I don't know what my problem is there. I guess Rancho Seco and I are just not a good "fit"......
I don't blame you.. Most of the fish are already kept. Especially when spawning seaon, I've witness people snagging big girls and throwing them into coolers.

Re: Rancho Seco?
I don't know why but around this time of year I don't catch much bass if any at all. Every other year around this time (summer) I catch them but this year I've been skunked. But over there I say spring time is best. I caught a few decent ones with 6 pounder being the biggest.
