3/0 and 4/0 Octopus for Striped Bass. Haven't had much luck this year though. Not sure if its the hook size, bait rigging or lack of fish.

#2 and #4 for AR Salmon and Steelhead. 1/0 for Oroville.

What about you guys?:help:

Hey All,

Our latest field test Product is a random selection Pautzke Fire Bait.

Fire Bait has a rich texture that forms into a ball easily and the colors are bright and vibrant. There are 14 distinctly different types of Fire Bait including Red, Pink, Orange, Natural, Chartreuse Garlic, Rainbow, Peach Garlic, Yellow, Green, American Wildfire, Garlic Wildfire, Mountain Wildfire, Atomic Garlic and Mallow Balls O’ Fire. These colors are enhanced with a sprinkling of glitter.
Fire Bait has a complex scent profile derived from krill and salmon egg oil. These are two scents that absolutely drive trout wild.

We’ll be selecting 10 anglers to field test two bottles of Fire Bait each in a variety of different colors. We are anxious to find out just how effective this new trout bait is when put into the hands of Fish Sniffer supporters!

First, like to thank Seon for the effort he puts in to this very worthwhile event, it was nice meeting you sir. Also the same thank you goes out to any others who helped make the day enjoyable for all in whatever way they chose to contribute. And, to my fellow boaters who shared their time and equipment with some very deserving people, Salute to you all.

My son and I got there around 7:30, already a nice crowd had assembled and Seon had already done the briefing, we checked in with Seon and prepped the boat. They bused the Vets in and Sean quickly organized and assigned people to boats. Very simple process and worked quickly with everyone cooperating. We took two fellas, Bob and Jim, who turned out to be good friends and worked together at the home. We all hit it off and it was like spending the day with a couple old friends. And a small world, Bob the small asian fella turns out to a part of the Fisherman Warehouse family, and uncle to Alan Fong.

We load up and head down river from Brannons, the wind is a bit brisk but died down to be a fantastic day on the water. Problem was dirty water, we just could not find clean water and some areas the trash was so bad you just could not troll. I depended heavily on the finder in an effort to locate fish, I was marking many but they were scattered and just not active. Even though the fishing was bad the guys were obviously enjoying being out there and we had some great conversation and lots of laughs.

Late in the day we got into some cleaner water on the San Joaquin and I began to see more fish closer together. My son says let me change them up to something different, he went to a crankbait he does well with on both stripers and bass. About that time I began to mark some bait in the 15 ft depth over some really uneven bottom. Then, there they were, nice ball of bait and the tell tale arches below and to the side of the ball. Told the guys to watch closely you are about to get bit, wham, Jim hooks up first fish of the day. After a nice fight and with Jim struggling a little with the equipment we net his first striped bass ever! High fives around. Nice fish. I say Bob your turn we can probably pick off another from this bait ball so turn around and set up to run over it again. No sooner did I get turned around than fish on, Bob has his first fish. Damn, its just a small bass and the bait had scattered. Made a couple more runs, picking up a couple more small bass and one short striper. Time to head back in.

Jim with his first striper and Bob his pal

Experience with Lamiglas Warranty?

Long story short, I have owned two lamiglas ultra light 7 foot rods. One was self admittedly snapped on a rock while picking it up last fall. I'm fine knowing that Lamiglas will not replace that one.

About a week ago, my other 7 footer lami was used for casting 1/2 oz swimbaits from shore to stripers. I either got hung up on a a large underwater log moving really quickly, or something hit my swimbait with the force of a freight train. The rod bent over as it has with salmon and stripes, but then I hear a sizzle. Line goes slack, my rod is cracked just below the eye on the top piece of the rod. It's not entirely fractured.

What will Lamiglas consider this to be? User negligence? The drag on my Abu Ambassadeur was set to normal, so I don't understand the fracture.

Honestly, I'm pretty much horrified to send them my rod in the mail all the way to Washington for 2 weeks, with $20. I've read pretty much nothing but bad reviews about lamiglas and the way they deal with broken or damaged rods.

Anyone have experience in this?

O.K. so I'm up at the lake this morning at 6:30 and on the water around 7:00am. The wind is already kicking up so I head into the marina bay and rig up the downriggers. If it's going to be windy the downriggers out there help to stabalize my boat.

I get all rigged up and try to head up to my honey hole but the wind was so strong that I had to fire the main up and run about 1200 rpm just to maintain 1.25 mph. I didn't care I was going to hang in there with those 4ft waves. I took a little green water over the bow but finally got where I was going so I turned her around and started trolling with the wind.

Almost instantly after the turn I started hooking up nice Steelhead. Not the whimps that were there last week, these were all in the 18-20" range and fatties. Not so amazingly, I was back at the dock by about 10:30, the down wind trip only took 1/2 hour. Ha.

So here's the funny part, I pull back into the bay to bring the downriggers in and I'm getting blown all over the place in 30kt gusts. I finally get them in but I forget to reel in the on of the rods so it's running behind the boat about 40' back.

A buddy of mine is on the dock and is going to give me a hand to get tied up. He's saying how many did you get. I said 6 nice ones, he say's better make that 7. I had no clue what he was talking about and then he say's. Damn, the fish just follow you trying to get into your boat. I still don't get it and then a I get closer he says, Dude are you going to bring that fish in or am I gonna have to do it for you.. I look behind me and here's my ultralight sitting in the rocket launcher bent over to the water almost. I played him for a while and then gave it a flip and off he went. I already had a nice fish for the smoker and had fun while the guy's that got skunked today just stood there with their jaws dropped.

Another guy that I had never met before said, Hey buddy you should have had a video of that it would be great advertising.

So anyway, that's my fishing brag. Yeah, it was pretty cool...and I'm still laughing. It's going to be a great year if this keeps up..

Since the levee gave way at Mildred Island in 1983, my family and friends and enjoyed much success trolling the area for stripers, and ending each trip with a stop to pick up a few catfish for dinner. We have done this continuously for these many years. We have trolled up stripers, salmon, and a few other species over the years, and you could always count on picking up some cats before you put the boat on the trailer.
A few years ago we started to see large sea lions in the area, and it was not uncommon to see them with a striper in their mouth. We didn't notice any change in the fishing right away, but as these years rolled on, it took longer to catch limits of stripers, and put some catfish in the basket.
In the last year or so, we have made a few trips to the Mildred Island area. Our success on these last 5 or so trips has been terrible. I can understand the lack of stripers at certain times, but what happened to all the catfish. The area seems to be void of catfish. Yesterday we gave it a try again. We boated one 18" striper on the troll, but could only catch 4 or 5 very small stripers on bait and no catfish at all.
When we got to the marina, I asked an employee what happened to all the catfish. He told me that the seals got em. Now is that possible? How much can these furbags eat? This is a very large area to be void of catfish. If I had not watched it happen over that last couple of years, I would not have thought it possible.

Back in the day on the Calaveras in the 80`s we use to kill them and let the Mother of nature take care of them , due to them eating small trouts and the eggs after spawning. we did the same for the Suckers that were in the river at times
Granted before we knew what the pike minnow was , we ate a few . is`t not a bad meat fish . red in color . just a bit in the bitter side.

I went out to black butte lake this past weekend and was fishing from the bank. It got really windy and I don't know if it was the wind or just me thinking the wind was messing with my fishing but needless to say we got skunked. I fished at night for cats with livers on a slip sinker and anchovies on a slip bobber. In the morning I fished for bass with poppers, lipless cranks, drop-shotting soft plastics and floating night crawlers. nadadamnthing! Oh and the wind was blowing everything in our direction and still nothing!

Am I correct when I say the wind messes up my fishing?

any tips when bank fishing on a windy day?
