The AC in the truck is desperately in need of recharging so instead of the long drive to Melones we went to Berryessa. I have to say it was a good decision. I also have to give it up to Larry Aaker and Rich Crispi for giving us the best advice and putting us right on the fish!
We were up at 4:30 and on the water at 7:30. Tried to start the boat and the battery we have been using for way too long (three years) was dead. Had to use one of our two remaining trolling batteries. Luckily the one we used lasted the whole trip.
Headed out to Ranch House and set up shop. 80 ft of water and 40ft down. Water temp was 68 when we got there and 72 when we left.
Anyways, First fish on in less that five minutes.
8:20- I got a 12" koke on a pink sling blade and a pink hoochie. Using corn and Kokanne special scent. Kept.

This was the best day we have had in the last couple of months. The only thing I could have wished for was a little cooler weather. It was a cooker!
The take home fish...

We made it back to Markely cove by 1pm but it was a zoo with all the lice trying to launch their boats so we didn't get out of there until 2pm.
I got home to some nice gifts and cards from our sons and Mike. Today is a good day to be a Mom!
I got to spend it doing what I love the most so that in itself is most AWESOME!
Hope you all gave your Moms some love. Lord knows we work for it. LOL
Take care my fishy friends and we will be out there bright and early tomorrow morning. Holla if you see us.

Fished Berry this past Tuesday with Natey and Spencer for 12 Kokes and way too many Rainbows released to four pounds. At 12:30 we had our nine fish so we decided to continue to fish and we'd just clean the fish. During the cleaning we got three more kokes to take home. Bonus!!

Here's what worked on Tuesday:

Speed: 1.3-1.4
Scent: Herring and Kokanee Feast
Depths:33'-51'
Lures: Apexes and a Hoochie
Colors; PInk and Green

The 9 fish that ended up being 12

So for Saturday's trip with Spencer I decided to try fish an area with hopefully less rainbows and more kokanee. So I tried Goat Island for nada for the first 45 minutes. From there we found productive waters. The kokes started to show and by 8:30 we were going to finish super early or start releasing fish. So we started releasing fish. By 9:30 the jet skiers were starting to show so we said "let's just finish up." Just before 10:00 we were done with out ten fish.

Here's what worked:

Speed: 1.4-1.5
Scent: Herring and Kokanee Feast
Depths: 35-43'
Lures: Apexes and a Hoochie
Colors: Pink and Green

One small King, three Kokanee & three Rainbow, two HNS, 1 LDR and 1 SDR. Bill Crooks joined me for the day to fish and check out my 15hp kicker. We launched at Markley Cove and ran out to the main lake. We fished mid-lake and near the Big Island. It sounded and looked like a slow day for most boats. We trolled all day at 1.7 mph using 4.5 colors of lead core and the downriggers at 25-60’. 38’ was the best depth for Kokanee, various depths for Rainbows & 75’ for the one King (at the dam). A pink or pink cotton candy hoochie with a pink/silver Sling Blade with a maggot on the front hook and some Shoepeg white horn on the trailing hook with garlic gel on the dodger & hoochie worked for the Kokanee and the Rainbows. A blue/silver hoochie with several maggots on each hook and a pink/silver Sling Blade got the one small King. 6 hours (7-1). Sunrise 5:52, % moon visible 36%. Water 71-72*. Air 70-79*. Sky clear. Wind 3-5 mph. Over 30 other boats out. Thanks for the company Bill.

I did a sunrise trip to New Melones today. My first stop was at the golden arches in Angels Camp and then on to the glory hole boat launch. The sunrise trip wasn't really necessary because the hot bite for most people today started after lunch again. But I enjoyed the morning trolling up the river arm passed the 49 bridge where I drew first blood a mile east of the bridge. A nice koke just shy of 14 inches. It was pink hoochie spinners with garlic corn all day for me today. The best depth was 55-70ft. and the best location was south of Rose Island trolling south 150' parallel to the shore line. There were lots of boats there but everyone was catching fish. I also fished the dam area. It was a beautiful day and just windy enough to make the fishing good. I released most of my two dozen fish today. I was only using one hook on my small hoochies so they were easy to release without handling them. I caught a lot of nice fat kokes between 13-14 inches. If you don't get very many take downs in the morning don't give up, it will pick up in the afternoon. It's a great year for NM and the fish are very feisty and give a good fight. We tried a variety of lures: green & pink Kok-a-Nuts behing pink, green dodgers or Sling Blades, white hoochie behind a white Sling Blade all tipped with a small pice of anchovy. 2.5 mph 40-80’ down with cable baiter anchovies, FBRs with & without flashers, hoochies, Apexes, flashers on our downrigger balls.

Six Coho, 1 released, to 1# 4oz, 7 HNS, 1 LDR (the big ones always get away), 1 SDR. Fished solo today, Kevin Wilson (Fishjunky) called late Monday saying he had to work mandatory overtime. I joined 37 other SIR/Jolly Hookers for a Derby at Oroville. I trolled all day (4 hours on my electric trolling motor, 2 hours on my 90). I fished 15-40’ down OTW or at 4 colors of lead core at 1.7-3 mph, 75’ back of the boat with pink hoochie/pink Sling Blade, green Kok-a-Nut/green dodger, white hoochie/white Sling Blade all with 2-hook leaders with a green or pink maggot on the front hook, a small piece of anchovy on the trailing hook and anchovy gel on the dodger/Sling Blade. Pink and the lead core rigs produced more bites, fish for me. I do not recall having a day at Oroville where I had so many HNS, lost as many fish. I worked the bridge area primarily with my electric and then took a long troll back to the Spillway launch on my big motor at 2.5-3 mph (several hits, one fish landed). 6 hours (6:15-12:15). Water 70.6-72.6*, clear. Air 62-90*. Wind: 3-5 mph. Sky clear.
At our weigh-in over 80 fish were reported landed. Ron Madsen got 1st with a 3#, 5 oz, Mustafa Abdu 2nd with a 1#, 9 oz, Tom West 3rd with a 1# 8 oz and Sammy Osuna got 4th with a 1# 7 oz.

Late start as headed out with a gang, launched at Capell Cove around 10:30am.... Lines in the water by 11:00 at Ranch House marking some fish at 40'...10 minutes in and we get a first koke at 14'' on a Lyman Batman, few moments latter a couple of bows, then a nice 15'' white/orange spinner/hoochie, then Larry's fire tiger w/sardine scented corn & orange/pink UV watermelon dodger. We had a SDR & LDR alongways, caught another 15'' with a lyman red dot frog behing Uncle larry flashers. All fish caught between 40-50', all colors producing with different lures, ended up with 3 kokes & 3 bows. They stopped biting around 2pm, so it was time for some watersports)

Great outing indeed! TL!

Fished Berryessa Sunday with the family after hearing some reports of better than a decent bite there. After arriving at Markley we motor out to the big water in search of Kokanee. Lines down at 6:30ish and after traveling north for ten minutes I graph a fish at 42' and I tell Cindy "Watch your deep rod at 40' feet a fish is right there." Of course my deep rod with a hoochie at 38' goes off. We boat a very nice 15" koke. So as long as we graphed fish and stayed in the "right water" it was game on. We had a quad that resulted in two Kokes, trout released, and a fish we didn't see. Then we also get a triple and few doubles. We finish up right around 10:15 with our 15th fish. We take a few pictures and clean our fish afterwards head home. Outstanding day with the family.
What worked for us:
Speed: 1.3-1.5
Scent: Herring
Depths: 30-40'
Lures: Hoochies and Customized Apexes
Colors: Pink, Orange, and Green

Hit the big B for some Koke action ,and thats what we got. Started allitle late this morning but that was Ok. The bite started about 6:30 with my brothers Rod drawing first blood, thats twice in a row now that he has taken my dollar. The fish are now down about 32 to 45FT. We said that today was going to be a Kokanee only tripp and it paid off. We had 9 kokes in the boat about 9;15 and then it was that Devil fish. That Devil fish took us on a long tripp but we ended up with 2 nice Limits with 2 of them over 17". We ended the day with 16 fish. No kings today. 3 trout-3 small kokes that where released and 10 fat kokes that are getting smoked in the morning. Ok this is what was working Today. Afishinado
Fish all came between 20-39' on gvf dodgers, mag tackle dodgers teamed up with crawlers, hoochies and spinners tipped with chunks of chad. Great day on the water and fish for the smoker!

Myself and KuKu4Kokes (Capt. Tony) treat ourselves every year to a couple guided trips. This is a great way to learn from a pro while letting someone else do all the work. This time we decided to fish for Berry Kings with Bill Dunn. We were not disappointed. We started the day rolling shad in the Markley/Dam area for good action and although the fish were smaller than last month we learned a lot. After keeping 4 of the better Kings we decided to chase some Kokes in the main body. We were able to finish up our limits of football Kokes. Of course Bill used with great success stuff that I don’t currently have in my arsenal. U/L Sierra Mist spinners in Gold/Pink and Copper/Pink and a RMT Super Hornet in green. Depths were 35‘-45’, Speed 1.6. Scent- Top Secret. I promised not to tell. Thanks again Bill for a great day on the water and taking the time to teach.
