I have a small portable Hummingbird depth/fish finder. On two recent trips to Gold and Bucks lakes I saw... Hopefully someone can answer my question. I have a small portable Hummingbird depth/fish finder. On two recent trips to Gold and Bucks lakes I saw several fish on my finder that were within 5 feet of the bottom or right on the bottom. My finder has a fish symbol in three sizes that pop up on the screen when going over fish. Most of the fish are of the smaller variety, with an occasionally a larger fish. I understand that the fish are revealed by their air bladder which comes up different as suspended on the screen. When the fish are down below 70 feet, is there much air in their bladder? Enough to tell size? I saw a lot of fish near the bottom, but in different locations. Could there be false readings on fish?
I didn't have any luck trolling about 5 feet off the bottom until I got to fish marked at 35 feet. I then started to catch macks, but only about 16 inches (throw backs).
I'll have to start to jig for them as summer comes on.
