Was thinking about heading up toward Oroville this weekend to get to know the Feather a little. Figure I keep talking about steelhead/salmon fishing down here maybe this year I should actually hold to my word. Just had a few questions for you gurus on here. It looks like the river is flowing just shy of 3500 right now. Is that typical throughout the summer or do they jack it around as they see fit (power demand). Whats a typical range for summer and fall. I imagine it'll be a low flow year due to the minimal snowpack. What would you say is optimum flow for the Feather? I'll be bankin it this year so I was going to look for some good bank access. Is 3500 going to flood most of the bank spots? Not really interested in the outlet hole. Too heavily populated for me. I'll take missing out on some fish to get away from the combat fishing. Anyways, thats the questions I have for now. Hopefully some of you guys can provide some good advice. Thanks in advance. Tight lines.

Since salmon season is almost here, I am going to make some new spinners but started thinking about blade colors. I have been very successful with nickel and/or chartreuse blades and slightly successful with glow or red blades in the old sac area. Has anyone been successful with gold/brass, copper, bright pink, black, white, whatever color, or hammered blades?

Just trying to think what color would be most visible in the stained 2-3' visibility water of the old sac area.

Hi guys. I am starting to understand how the Sac River fishes for fall chinook, to a very small extent.

I've contacted some guides and heard the banter on here and it seems like early season river salmon fishing is best upriver near Chico since the river water is cooler up there.

Makes sense, but are there more active biters closer to SF bay as well? The cooler bay water should mean more actively biting fish down there as well in my experience up North. In fact fishing near the river mouth at the ocean was a great spot. Does anyone have experience trolling for salmon lower in the system? I'm thinking Rio Vista, Isleton, or even down towards Benicia? I haven't been able to track down temp gauges, but I know they are out there for various parts of the bay, delta, and river.

Best,

Hi guys, last year I noticed alot of boats had some type of a rack that went across the back of the boat which had rod holders mounted to it. They were usually anchored up with some kwikfish or trolling. I was looking for them online and I can't even find what they are really called. Are these something that you have to make yourselves? I would love to come up with a way it could mount to my scotty downrigger mounts. Any help appreciated guys, thanks!

I am so damn excited about this salmon season I can hardly contain myself. Last year it seemed that the season took off up north first. I have a lot to learn. I need a guide to show me the river so I can fish it myself later. My wife might kill me if I get the whole boat. What I need is someone who can add me to the boat or I need to find someone who wants to go fishing with me. Samonid and I went out earlier for stripers and had a great trip. I need to hit him up because he knows a hell of a lot more about salmon than I do.

An Epic Salmon fishing trip landed us in the SF Chronicle

My wife, our 3 year old daughter and I, headed to Half Moon bay so I could meet a friend to fish a Salmon charter, and my daughter and wife could...

My wife, our 3 year old daughter and I, headed to Half Moon bay so I could meet a friend to fish a Salmon charter, and my daughter and wife could head to the beach and hangout for the day. So we arrived the night before so I could be ready to go in the early morning.

We got up at the butt crack of dawn, the wind was blowing, a bit cold, and the water was a little rough. We had quite a few people get seasick on our way out to the reef early on.

Fortunately for some, the Sea eventually settled down as the day progressed. The sun came out and what seemed like a gloomy day ended up being pretty nice toward the end. We saw a couple humpback whales, and a Grey. It was an amazing sight. If we didn’t catch anything, the visuals were worth every penny we paid for admission.

The night before I went to Fishermans Warehouse and purchased a Lamiglas, Classic glass that I was anxious to test out.

We started our troll on this 20 angler boat, and it immediately began. I had hooked a fish, I reeled that baby in a foot at a time. It was going to be a big one, got it within net distance and it was not to be. The netter missed and cut my line, that’s all she wrote. This happened 3 more times throughout the day until I finally got one mid-day. It was only a 10 pounder, but it’ll do. Meanwhile the boat was in a complete frenzy from start to finish. We’re talking 3 hook ups at a time was not uncommon. If anyone has trolled with a charter, you know the dance.

My buddy had limited out, and was then catching fish for others who were too sick to fish that day. I sat on the one fish I caught after having missed several. No doubt my frustration level with myself was through the roof.

As the day was winding down, the skipper gave the 5 minute warning to reel the poles in so we can head home. 5 minutes passed and I was anticipating the skip to ask us to reel in the pole, but I’ll be dam if my buddy didn’t hook into another one.

While watching my friend reel his pole in and encouraging him, someone yelled at me, “PICK YOUR ROD UP!”, I had hooked into one, and there was no way in hell this fish was getting away! My buddy and I caught the last two fish of day at the 5 minute buzzer.

The skipper and deckhand nearly netted our fish at the same time. It was an awesome experience. I had never caught a fish at the buzzer before, after 2 decades of fishing, this was a first. And because of my friend, some poor seasick souls were able to walk away with a fish.

We caught 32 fish on the boat that day, 10 shy of the boat limit, and only one deck hand and a skipper who helped net quite a few. Our boat gave a valiant effort to catch its limit, but a boat limit was not to be had that day, but everyone left with fish, which is a good feeling for the skipper, and those on the boat.

Because our success was so great, when I got back to the hotel, I was able to convince my wife to let me stay another day. I think she was more excited than I was--she loves fresh ocean salmon.

So my friend and I got up early, and our boat headed out of the harbor. The water was somewhat calm that day, almost glassy. The sun came out early with only a few clouds. It was clear enough on the way out to the reef we were able to see Mavericks. For those who are unfamiliar with Mavericks, it's a surfers dream and death trap all in one, they made a movie about it, definitely worth watching.

A few miles later we were in the water. I don't think anyone could sit down for more than 5 minutes before getting a take down, or having to move for another angler who was reeling their fish in. This happened all day long. Trolling a charter is not for everyone, especially if you do not have patience. But it definitely is a tried and true method for catching many fish.

So once again, it was nearing the end of the day, I had caught one fish, lost a couple others. With a half hour left to fish, my new Lamiglas, classic glass rod had a takedown that left a couple eyes of my rod pulled in the water. It was on!

It took me 15 minutes to land this 23 pound beauty that limited me out. I was thinking I had the biggest fish of the day, and the $$ pot. But it wasn’t to be had. Out of the 42 fish, I had the second biggest fish of the day, losing the money pot by .5 pounds! HA!

The boat had finally limited out, and on our way back to the harbor, we got to see several humpback whales, truly one of nature’s most amazing creatures.

That day was one for the ages, the SF chronicle felt the same and put a picture of all of us in the sports page holding our limits. It was an Epic trip, and one we will never forget.

When I got back home I must have had 50 pounds of fresh Salmon. I ended up giving more than half away to friends, family, and co-workers. And the rest either ended up getting eaten or our freezer in vacuum sealed bags.

It’s been a great Salmon season thus far, and having spoken with several other commercial fishing boats, and anglers, I think my charter boat experience was a microcosm of what is happening with our Salmon population. I’m hoping it will carry over into our river systems through the Salmon season, which is why I posted this here, so we can all get excited about what is to come in July 16th.

Cheers!

I grew up fishing in the mountains and if someone came up and started fishing right next to you, someone's mother was often drawn into the conversation. Almost always plenty of room and there is almost never a need to crowd someone or have someone do it to you.

Now I have my own boat, and am doing more river fishing, often I have to decided just how close I want to get to someone, especially when I am anchored up. I understand that you don't anchor directly below someone or in their line but about how far off to the side is generally acceptable? For me I could care less as long as they give me room to get a rod off the side of the boat and a reasonable distance past that.

I often end up fishing in an area I really don't want to, just to keep from crowding someone, only to look back later and there are a couple of boats where I decided not to stop. So how close is too close?
