Thought I’d share this video with members, not so much of the caught Salmon but the editing, inserting the title, adding music and posting on youtube.
My wife edited and posted the previous Salmon catch from last year. I’m not computer literate, but this year, I decided to “walk” myself in editing the day’s Gopro footage, which took me many hours to product.
It’ll get better in the future.
We trolled all day at 2.5 mph 40-80’ down with cable baiter anchovies, FBRs with & without flashers, hoochies, Apexes, flashers on our downrigger balls. We launched at Westside with no line. 6 hours (7-1), 67 miles. 3 locations (SW of Bodega 8 miles at 300’ depth, Elephant Rock 60-80’, the only action we saw was off the Russian River, 270’, N 38.24 W 123.12). Sunrise 6:08, % moon visible 9. Bodega Bay Harbor tides: L 4:27 0.0’, H 10:40 4.4’, L 4:06 1.6’. Water 55.9-56.8*, major jelly fish from 70’-270’ depths everywhere. Air 50-76*. Sky clear. Wind WNW 6 mph, wind waves 1’ at 13 seconds, swell 1’ at 15 seconds, we motored out at 18 mph and in at 23-26 mph/4,200 RPM. It was as beautiful and calm (FAC) as it gets. A few boats out deep, South, most off the Russian (over 40 boats working the area). Channel 9 reports sounded like a slow day for most, limits for a few. Saw what we think was a Pilot Whale. Thanks for the company Chris.

Bottom line 18 fisherman, 20 fish.
Wanted to go out earlier but noone was fishing on Mon, Tuesday due to high winds. Most boats were fishing for rock fishing on Wed. From what I heard on Thurs, most boats could find the fish. The high winds moved the krill and salmon. So when we got underway I didn't have high hopes. On our 1st stop I was the only one that got a bit, but it did take. Afer about 30-40 mins with out another bite we pulled up lines and move north.
On the next stop we got our lines in and right way someone landed the 1st fish. While trying to boat that one I got a hookup and was able to land it. The boat got into a good school of fish with sevral others landing them. With in a another hour I got my 2nd fish of the day. I had another sinker so I continued to fish. I landed my 3rd fish this one was under size. The fishing died down but we would get a fish every now an then.

White Cap Al was able to join me for a little Salmon troll yesterday. Launched at Moss at 6 am and was at the hole about 7 where the fleet was already trolling. I immediately boated one, then shortly after Al gets a hit, but no stick. I get another hit, fight it a while then my line broke at the swivel and the Salmon takes off with my 10” Dodger and hoochie. “Damn”, says I. Al admonished me for not changing out my leader from last season . Then the worst happened…damn Cannon downrigger swivel base busted at the pin... that ended my day of fishing .

Al missed two or three more drive bys then we called it a day about 1pm.
It was a beautiful day on the Blue and had a great friend to share it with. Thanks Al and as always, enjoyed your company.

How far down are the salmon when they are holding off shore, or do you have to try throughout the whole column? If they are chasing krill or bait, I could see the forage moving up or down with light conditions, etc., but I'm wondering if I can manage without downriggers. I have flat line weights for the top and trolling planers for deeper lines, but they will only get down 20-30' at most (my east coast mackerel gear!). This may do later in the season for albies, but I want to know if it's worth trying to adapt this to salmon. Advice appreciated.

We had a group of 6 guys in the city for a batchlor party. We decided to charter a boat out of pier 39. He said the salmon was hot so we were heading out to the battle grounds. We had a 2+ hour boat ride to the fish, 90 minutes of fishing for 8 limits (captian and deck hand also got limits) and then the long ride back. For a pier 39 boat I was impressed. It was a great day on the salmon grounds. Fish were 9-23 pounds.
