I had a similar experience last month that didn't end up as happily as your story. I was wading and catching nice rainbows about 12" or under. It was super fun and I could land the fish easily by hand. I was wading upstream and saw a place with a fallen log that was causing the water to pool. I saw a bit of shadow that looked large, made the cast and got an immediate hookup. The fish got into the reel and started to pull line against the drag. During the fight, my son happened to walk by and took out his camera for some action/victory shots. He claims that the fish was a large brown. I wasn't able to identify it clearly. Though, it did look like a brown to me. Although I was able to bring the fish close, I was having a lot of difficulty controlling the rod in water above the waist and below the chest. I was trying to hold the rod in one hand and kept trying to figure out what the heck to do to grab the fish. Heavy brush and a drop-off at the banks was preventing me from getting the to shore. Bummer. The fish eventually got off. However, it was still very exciting. I can remember it clearly to this day, the sound of the reel. The fish also breached the water in front of my son. It's interesting that although I remember the breach, I don't have an clear image of the fish in my head. I just remember that it was a fish, the splash, the sound of the line.
I'm am so GLAD that YOU BROUGHT IN THE FISH.

Beautiful fish, Meme. The owner of Carson River Resort told me he/ they are stocking the area heavily with trophys until closing. If you're in the area, stop by to say hello and thanks. He's very involved in helping to keep the E. Carson a viable fishery. I'm sorry I can't remember his name.
And thanks for the tips! I'm on my way out there right now! Tight Lines!

Re: East Carson Sept. 27-28
I fished hare's ears (probably 14-16's) and prince nymphs, and some littler nymph's in green with some flash. Most flies were 14-18 size. I think the smaller did better.
I experienced one hatch of small mayflies (?) but my dry flies never got looked at. I forget if I mentioned most of the fish (especially the rainbows) were visible and the brown's were doing a lot of surface frolicking. They seemed mostly interested in each other not eating. BIG suckers. Some jumping too . . . large fish 15"-18" . . . made me want to cry when they got lockjaw.
What I loved was seeing the rainbows holding in the pools and how they would cruise up and look at almost every drifted particle and when they didn't want it, just cruise back into their waiting positions. Two or three of the fish I missed were such subtle hits, the only reason I knew they were fish was a slight hooking and then a flash of the fish as it swam off from the fly. Now I realize why the guide on the SAC last year was telling me to be free with my hook sets. I wasn't setting when the indictor paused . . I was always wating to it jerked or went under. Apparently lots of fish mouth the fly without moving the indcators.

Haha what a great wrestling match! That was a very enjoyable post. Id say after that intense battle and bringing you to all fours he was worth going to the fryer. Great Report looks like you gave it to the river this time. What colors/patters were you drifting? See any hatches? THanks - TO

East Carson Sept. 27-28
My first post of a thread to the board. I usually don't have much to say, but love reading others stories for info.
I took off for the East Carson (bravely rejecting last year's experience that resulted in no hits in two days). I fished the area above hangman's bridge and caught 6 fish Monday. Two browns and four rainbows. I expected fish under 12" but all were 12" or over. All were caught driftiing nymphs where fast water entered pools or just below serious riffles.
Tuesday I was up at dawn fishing at first light. Actually the early rising had good and bad. It was damn cold after such a hot day Monday. I was wishing I had gloves about the time I swa something bump my indicator. I hooked up a substantial fish which drug me up (an almost over a 3' falls) and down the river several times. It turned out to be a big brown trout. I realized I should have brought my net too late. I manged to pull it up on the bank only to watch it spit the fly and start hopping back to the water.
I must have really wanted a picture because I dove in and grabbed him around the middle. To my surprize I couldn't get my two hands around his middle. So, on all fours, I wrapped my arms around the sucker and beached him and me.
It was only about 18" long, but it was a fatty. I think it was a planted fish because it had that rounded tail large planted fish often get. Since he wasn't a wild one, I invited him home for dinner and he accepted. I'm not sure he would have made it after that shallow water wrestling match anyhow.
It wasn't pretty, but I sure wish I had video tape. AFV here I would come!!!
I caught one other wild trout and then left to get dry clothes. I enjoyed myself and the solitude.
