I have caught stripers on clams, they dont last long on the hook when the adolescent stripers are in thick. Too much work to get them out of the shell and on the hook too...Originally Posted by tuara37

I red about east coast anglers using clams. Anybody hook a striper here using clams? Perhaps nobody use it coz it's expensive compared to anchos.
The 20+lb. striper I caught off Noriega section of Ocean Beach last August ate 38 small-medium size anchovies, 1 grass shrimp, and my Mickey jig. One voracious eater, first time I hooked up on a striper that hungry. This one turned out to be a male striper, and was probably gorging on those chovies (it was fat), preparing to go back up the bays and estuaries.
Mr-T 1st Surf Striper had a belly full of Chovies. fish probably weighed 5lbs with empty belly. 11lbs with belly full of chovies ;D ;D

Dimpala caught one in the surf this year and when he opened it's mouth you could see it was full of chovies..and it still took wood, 3 oz. popper.
Check out this link. Here's something new about Striped Bass diet. Sounds like they will eat whatever is available. I wonder if they eat Jacksmelt too.... :
