Re: Rolling Anchovies for stripers in the Sacramento area
I have done it using a Rotary Salmon killer and a banana weight with mixed success. As stated, the bait breaks down rather quickly. Especially the cheapo anchovies sold in bulk. There are the more expensive ones sold usually 8-10 in a tray for salmon but cost nearly $10 for the tray. I have heard that if cured and put in salty ice water on the boat they will last longer. I'll stick to my BBR's, Yozuris, and Bombers.

When I first started fishing the Sac, I had recently moved to the area from Seattle where we frequently trolled with bait. I used a bait hood with two hooks on 'dines rigged to a downrigger to control depth like I grew up doing up north. It does work, but there are simpler methods using lures that are just as effective IMO.

Yes it works. you use a banna weight. I have had success but the anchovies and sardines break down so fast you end up fishing with no bait. If you get fresh sardines then it would work. Troll them with a flasher just like you would halibut in the bay.

Re: Rolling Anchovies for stripers in the Sacramento area
It definitely work, but it's no better than using any other lures for that matter of fact. But here's a little problem, you'll have to get them down at the right depth as the Sacramento river isn't really at a level bottom. So it's not something where you can troll all day long without any worries about hitting this log on the bottom or getting snagged up on rocks/structures and etc. Which is why most people use lures to hit a specific depth that averages throughout the Sacramento River. At least in my experience in trolling on the Sacramento for stripes...

Rolling Anchovies for stripers in the Sacramento area
Has anyone ever tried trolling for stripers in the Sacramento River in the Sacramento area say out of Miller Park or Garcia Bend? You never see people trolling something like rolling shad or anchovies. Anyone ever try. You would think it would work. Any thoughts?
