You can catch live bait (bluegill,pikeminnow,splittail) and use them in the area they were caught, you cannot put them in your car and transport them to another location and use them. haha, naw you didn't confuse me, sometimes the rule can be confusing because enforcement is so black and white. I guess if you want to completely play it by the book then no transportation period. I do think it's silly though that you can buy mudsuckers/bullheads at the baitshops and transport them live to wherever you fish. In fact, it has been biological and scientific studies have proven that mudsuckers cannot reproduce once transported from their native water. mehh enough of my mini rant, I just wanna go catch me a beastly striper i guess i'll have to shell out approx $2.25 ea mudsucker at the baitshop.

    New to area and to forum: Bait questions

    Here's the Reg on Bait:
    http://www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/Fr...-ch2-art3.html

    EXCERPT from above link: (You should still read all of the regs)
    4.05. Bait Fish Capture Methods.

    • (a) Approved bait fish may be taken only by hand, with a dip net, or with traps not over three feet in greatest dimension. Such bait fish may not be purchased, bartered, sold, transferred or traded; or transported alive from the location where taken. Any other species taken shall be returned to the water immediately. Traps need not be closely attended. Dip net use: A dip net must be hand held, and the motion of a dip net shall be caused only by the physical effort of the operator. A dip net may not be moved through the water by any mechanical force or motorized device.

    Re: New to area and to forum: Bait questions

    Hey there guys, regarding the last comment about bluegills only being legal to use as bait if used in the same body of water they are caught in. How about the rules for using mudsuckers? My friend lives in the pittsburg area and catches mudsuckers over nearby bs bait in pitt or the pittsburg marina in the rocks along the shore. However; he uses them over by rio vista and has been catching really big stripers lately. Are we allowed to transport these mudsuckers since they are still being used in the same body of water but just at a different location? I've also run into fishermen from the alameda area and have caught mudsuckers in san leandro and use em out here in the delta, now is that legal as well? The rules sometimes confuse me because the times that my friend has encountered a dfg warden, they didn't even care about his mudsuckers, they just checked for license and fish and that was it.

    Bluegill is legal in those waters as long as they are caught there and not transported in from another location

    Welcome to the "left" coast and the boards. Fishing from shore in Sherman Is. area can be productive on a number of different bait choices. Instead of going into detail and listing all the options Im going to be lazy and send you here;
    BassJack.com

    BassJack offers a ton of info on techniques and baits for striper and sturgeon that work well in that area. As far as live bait in that area try mudsuckers.
