Which is why sharkin' is better in SB early and then by Fall SPB gets them in, I would imagine a similar pattern for the halibut. I too am looking forward to halibut this year. No 'chovie drifting for me last year, and I miss it. Just don't set the hook is the big lesson I have learned and have to constantly remind myself about.
Have been targeting halibut for only last five years or so. Seems every year the south bay is first location to experience a hot bite, then central bay then Paradise, etc. Have others found this to be the case? If so, why do you think this south to north pattern occurs?
halibut in fact can be fished year round determining were they are as years ago right before the gate pulled in a hog 45lbs. BUTT two days before Christmas.. i sure do look forward to better halibut fishing then there was last year....MoMoney i hope so you get a boat had a great time with you and my brother last time we went out. well nayr trolling should be a good key to target and search them waters ..
Last year was a strange one for sure. Started out ok in south bay until the commericals fished it out. Central bay never did get going. In July they showed up big time on the north bar, was great to get a limit of halibut on the morning tide then run up the coast for a salmon or two. We shall see.
Talk of halibut gives be goose bumps.Im kind of worried about a late rainy season this year.I remember a few years back we had rain for 30 days in march,so its still possible.Salinty in the bay fluctuates big time as its so shallow.Id better get crackin and find me a a boat soon or Im gonna be missing the early season action.
Unless we see a lot of rain in the next few weeks, I will be out conducting my own research late February . Trolling some of the productive waters of years past... Im glad you guys brought this up because I've sure spent a lot of time cotemplating this in the past few weeks.
I agree 100%, and hoping the start is closer to March than May. In fact I think the salinity has such a bearing on where they go I am going to start documenting salinity of water in my notes at areas fished. I have a hunch that is a calculation that may improve catch rates. just a hunch, trying to think outside the box. Ill be at the local aquarium store looking for a hyrdrometer.
