    Re: Anybody fished Costa Rica?

Thats a pencil popper. Roosters love em. I caught roosters in Cabo but the fish dont very much besides size wise. They still eat the same stuff. There are some pigs down in Costa Rica.

Any more advice on catching this and other tropical inshore species would be appreciated.

i havent fished costa rica but i've fished nicaragua a few times. i doubt its much different. There is some bigass fish down that way, honey holes are a dime a dozen. You can even get a guide to take you out for next to nothing.

    good luck!

Wow! I love this Forum. Talk about a picture being worth a thousand words.

    Many thanks to "drstressor"

I have seen these and I think I may even have some, but they are smaller more for freshwater. I will check out the local tackle stores with a printing photo of this one in hand.

    Muchas gracias,

Pencil poppers are sold under a number of brands. Gibbs and Cotton Cordell come to mind.

Roster fish are jacks and they will all just about climb over each other to get at any surface lure that is retrieved as fast as you possibly can bring them in. The idea is to try to take the lure away from the fish. You can't do that with jacks.

Striperman, Thanks for the info. Is the "Pencle popper" a brand name or a type of popper? Sorry for being so ignorant.

Have you ever fished in Costa Rica or did you catch Roosterfish in another location?

There is nothing like catching fish on topwater. Roosters love topwater baits. Pencle poppers and such will do the trick. Give it a shot. Its a blast and you can catch some monsters!

iluv2fish, Liberia is also a great alternate destination. About an hour and a half drive to Nosara. Two totally different life styles between Quepos and Nosara. That entire peninsula there on the north pacific coast is to die for. I was just there about this time last year. Must be time to plan another trip.

Los Suenos is only 90 minutes from San Jose. Great fishing there: sails, marlin, snapper, roosters etc. Give Capt Brandon Keene a call in Costa Rica @ 506 307 4717. He lives there year round and is dialed in. Have fun.
