Nothing wrong with retail store gear as long as your clean it and care then them :-) just like a car you can have a high end Cadillac or a Ferrari ones smoother, faster and cleaner lol...

But still if you care for the gear you have it should last a season if not longer!

Well a buddy of mine has the same combo that has lasted him over 3 years now...so there's some testament for ya. Plus, UglyStiks have a pretty good reputation. I know there's better, but I put most of my "extra" money into my guns, not poles...

I probably should have read this before spooling:

Talking Re: Shakespeare Reel busts AGAIN

    Thank you both!

As it turns out, you both were right. My 30# test PowerPro Braided line was spinning on the reel while the drag was locked. I feel like an idiot! I followed a guide online for how to spool a reel with monofilament, but I had no idea braided line required a different setup. Thanks to all who viewed, I guess it's a rookie mistake. Live and learn.

Going to follow the following video in re-spooling, as I have a separate spool for my reel.

How to Spool Braided Line onto your Spinning Reel - How To Prevent Line Twist - YouTube

If you have a better link for me, I'm all ears. Thanks again all!

Hmmm...yes, I have PowerPro Braided 30# test on there...I have an additional spool. Maybe I'll try loading that up with some 12# test mono to see if that's my problem.

great observation alantani. blurry if you didnt spool on monofilament first or wrap electrical tape on your bare spool before filling it up with braid. then that is probly what is happening.
