Re: Who snells their sturgeon rigs?

I snell my hooks. I've practiced many times and I can do it in the dark in a couple of seconds. Is it equally effective as knots? I've had some free time and did some testing. On 15lb big game mono, "my" palomar knot breaks at about 18 lbs and my snell breaks about 15 lbs. This may be different for others but I like to test my own tackle to know how it preforms. I still snell becuase it presents a straight linear j hook pull and makes my circle hook rigs turn better.

I make wire leaders with 1/2 egg weights on them.

I mean "when I have used weight on my leader, I haven't caught as many fish as when I don't use weight on my leader"

I don't use any weight on my leader either. Caught plenty of them with a hi-low rig too. High faster water or shallow slack tide, I haven't notice a difference. There's a video somewhere on YouTube showing sturgeons feeding on rainbow trouts in mid depth.

[QUOTE=QueenAnnesRevenge;1115398]Super ineffective having bait near the bottom when fishing for bottom feeders

That made me chuckle. Honestly, in shallow water with a light tide, it probably doesn't make a difference. BUT, in deeper water and/or bigger tides I think I definitely helps...as Queen pointed out. And because most of us tie leaders at home, I put the weight on as I don't know what the day may call for.

I can't help wondering how you measure the effectiveness?
