    Re: Stanislaus River Info Wanted

Fished the afterbay near the confluence of the spillway about 15yrs ago. Lots of wild fish, planters and holdovers. Had a friend who caught some nice browns in the 5lb class, even had them mounted. It was/is artificial lure only, the game wardens liked to park on the road above and glass the fishermen below. There can be a sizeable undertow at times so be careful if you wade and use caution if the spillway is running. Lots of rattlesnakes too so be extra careful, IIRC a fisherman got bit.

There was at that time a sizeable population of trout, pressure was moderate to heavy on weekend summer months. Fall months you would have the place to yourself.

Later I read a population of otters moved in and pretty much wiped out a good portion of the trout? Not sure how it is now but there are plenty of other great fishing spots so I never returned.

Also of concern is the nearby Sand Flat campground has been a crime scene for many years. Just earlier this year an amber alert went out and 2 persons died. There was also a disappearance of a camper there too.

The trail that follows the Middle Fork Stanislaus River between Beardsley Afterbay and Sand Bar Flat Campground, covering a distance over four miles I heard is great for sight Trout fishing. People have told me its an amazing spot and I have always wanted to go check it out.
