Wow nice that's a pretty fish. If you fish the Truckee a lot, you should check out Gilligans Guide Service | Truckee River Fly Fishing He post a lot of pretty fish and usually says which flies are working.

Lol no, but we sometimes catch those on the Truckee when nymphing along the bottom. The body was a more uniform color like the pic I posted(which was from Google). When I was in Minnesota this summer they were selling suckers up to 12" long to use as Muskie/Pike bait since they are not "gamefish". In most states "gamefish" cannot be used as bait, hence no catching a small green sunfish and using it as Muskie bait(which they're used to eating).

Don't worry, we were not. I meant below as in south, not below as in "downstream".

Now that I look at pics of squawfish it must have been something else. Some kind of sucker probably. It had a mouth on the bottom as opposed to squawfish which I guess are Pike Minnows. It was probably 7 or 8 inches and ate a worm. It looked like this....

The private fish provided by the county don't have clipped fins. Some of thge DFG have clipped fins. There are lots of natural fish below Hangman's Bridge but this is augmented by E. Carson stocks above the bridge and fish stocked in Nevada.

Sounds like you squeezed in some good fishing. tough luck on the big brown at least you caught a glimpse of her. I may be wrong but i don't think iv'e ever caught a planter with a clipped fin.
A bad fisherman will leave trash and take fish.
