Re: Eagle Lake Mid November
Some more advice...
At Fishermen's Warehouse, they have a good waterproof map of Eagle Lake. Invest in one. It will help you to understand where Eagle's Nest, Youth Camp, Pelican Point, Shrimp Island, etc. are located. All are good places to fish in the fall.
You do not necessarily need down riggers at that time of year. I have had some of my very best luck by simply surface trolling a night crawler. You need only place a split shot about 3' or 4' above the worm. Make sure you use a swivel to keep twists out of your line.
Obviously, use a worm threader to put the head up the line covering the top of a bait-holder hook, have the hook poke out the center of the worm, and leave the tail to wiggle as you troll. A giude up there cuts the head off his worms and leaves only an inch of tail. He also puts about a 5mm red bead above the worm. This, he says, simulates a wounded leach. Red bead, or not, this is one of the most tried and true fishing methods at Eagle Lake in the fall.
I always use a Pro-Cure kokanee oil scent on my night crawlers. Buy a worm blower bottle and fill it with the oil. You can easilly insert the needle to give your worm a good injection. Trust me... I have outfished my peers with this simple method from a 12' aluminum boat.
I have fished Eagle Lake for several years with great success. In my previous post, I suggested you PM me for more detail. Everyone has very generously given you enough advice to get started. I recently fished the lake for ten consecutive days during a "slow bite" and never spent a day "skunked".
Take warm clothes and wet weather gear! Good luck!!

Re: Eagle Lake Mid November
Good Morning fellas,
Great advice, thank you all!!!! I know what to use now, but what about depth? Will I need a down rigger this time of year? Judging from the info I've read so far the trout will be up on the surface and depth won't be as important as distance away from the boat. And what about location? Where's a good spot for a newbie such as myself? I'm new to boating too, so any advice to keep me from offending my fellow fisher would be greatly appreciated.
Again, thanks all for the insite and great article Cal, thanks for sharing your methods and favorite lake

Greenman, we primarily use the mediums, but have also caught fish on the small, large and a few on the fish tail patterns. *

Re: Eagle Lake Mid November
During warm weather the cool water that the trout find comfortable is denser than the warm surface water and this causes the cool water to sink to the bottom of the lake. In the fall and winter when the surface temperature gets colder than the water below it sinks, because it is denser than the deeper water. Wind can speed this process.....For the trout angler this means that the trout go deep in the summer and stack up in the thermocline. When the lake turns over the trout come to the surface and scatter, often moving toward the shoreline.

Awesome,
Thank you guys for all the info. I'm getting more excited the more I hear about this lake!!
One question: What does it mean when a lake turns over? What causes a lake to do this? Okay, that was two questions, Sorry!!

Faceplant, fishing at Eagle should be good in Mid Nov. *We usually fish Eagle the first or second weekend in November and have always done pretty good during this time. *This year we'll be on the water 11-10 thru 11-13.
The following lures have worked for us trolling in early to mid Nov.:
-Seps Grubs in brown and Green.
-Jay Fair trolling flys in Orange, olive green and Tui Chub colors.
-Sure Catch lures http://www.surecatchlures.com/ in Watermelon, Grey Shad, Gator and Red Dog. *You can order these over the phone using the link provided, and can also buy some of the patterns at the local stores in both Spalding (West side of lake) and at Stones Landing (north end of the lake).
The orange patterns seem to work best at first light. *Troll slow with the above lures- if you have a GPS keep your speed between 1.1 and 1.4 mph. *Mix it up until you find the color that works. *
Give us a shout if your on the water during that time. *We'll be in a Red North River, and will have the VHF on Ch. 69. *
Good luck! * *
(Edit) Forgot to mention, try trolling 5-15 feet OTW if your using downriggers, or 2-3 colors out with leadcore. *Keep your lure 100 ft. or more behind the boat.

Re: Eagle Lake Mid November
Hey Faceplant (ouch!) look at the home page and click on my article "Fall:Trophy Time At Eagle Lake"...That will tell you everything you need to know. Trolling can be very good during the fall, but for size and numbers it is hard to beat bobber fishing. Let me know if you have any questions, Eagle is my favorite lake and I'd love to help out....Cal

Re: Eagle Lake Mid November
I haven't fished up there "yet".But by then I would guess you should be able to just top line by then as the lake turns over & the fish come to the surface.
I believe VacavilleBob went up there after Prymide fest yesterday,so ought to be getting a few reports from again soon. He'd be the 1 to really get good info from.
Goodluck & be looking for your reports when you go.
