More than 200 anglers fished in the Spring Trout Derby at Convict Lake from May 16 to raise money for future stocks of Alpers rainbow trout.

"We didn't have very many boats on the water for the derby," stated David DeSurra at Convict Lake Resort. "Most people that come to the lake favor fishing off the bank because the fish are planted at the south shore and hold fairly close to the bank."

The top areas fished during the derby were the south shore and off the jetty. Anglers also landed fish at the inlet and north shore. The top baits ranged from Power Worms and Thomas Buoyant lures to Wooly Buggers and Kastmasters.

"I am really grateful for all of the participation we received," said DeSurra. "The proceeds from the $5.00 entry fee will go towards stocking Convict Lake with Alpers trout in the future. We will also be awarding $5,500 in prizes that include a boat rental and cabin stay on the lake."

According to DeSurra, from April 15 to the present, over $10,000 worth of fish have been planted into the lake for anglers to catch.

The derby winners include Jim Thorpe from Laguna Woods, who weighed in a 5.75 lb. Alpers trout to take first place. Thorpe enticed his fish while using a power worm off the jetty. Second place was taken by Ryan Kidwell with 5.39 pounds. Mike Malick weighed in third place with 5.31 pounds.

Other anglers who scored during the derby include Melissa Piscione with 5.30 pounds for fourth place. Mark Williams came in fifth with 5.12 pounds and Richard Perkins placed sixth with a 4.40 pound Alpers trout. Peyton Kirkpatrick brought in a 3.94 pound trout that put him in seventh place.

The winners board was followed by Bruce Hopper with 3.78 pounds, Don Chaves with 3.33 pounds and Paul Tutunjian with a 2.60 pound Alpers trout taken on a small trout lure off the south shore.
