Mixed Reports On July 16
Sacramento Salmon Opener

By: Jayson Lira
July 22, 2002

Anglers fishing this season's salmon opener on the Sacramento from the Bend Bridge to Colusa found mixed results, with the best results in the Red Bluff area. Since the salmon bite was early in the morning, the "early birds" found the best salmon action on July 16.

Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing found excellent fishing below the Red Bluff Diversion Dam on the opener. "We only fished for about two hours before my four anglers caught their limits of chinooks," he stated.

Kirk fished from the diversion dam down to Coyote Creek. "The big fish of the day was a monster 34 pounder caught on a Flatfish by Jim Sels of Castro Valley," said Portocarrero.

On a follow up trip on the Sacramento River, Kirk ended up with one fish per rod for his 4 passengers. "The bite was tougher, since the fish got pounded on by so many boats on the opener, but that's typical for a big event like this," said Portocarrero.

"There were a lot of boaters out on the water catching salmon on the opener," reported Rene Villanueva of Steelie Dan's Guide Services. "My clients hooked two salmon, but lost both fish. I wasn't able to get on the water as early as I had expected because the boat ramp at Woodson Bridge was closed, so I had to put in near the Hamilton City Bridge. I fished down river to Six Mile Hole."

Rene hooked his fish by backtrolling Flatfish with a four ounce weights and sardine wrappers.

"Even though the fish count was close to that of last year's, the fishing is much better so far than it has been for several years," said Randy Bogue, fishing guide. "I would attribute the better bite to the number of fish still holding in the lower river."

"On opening day, the 4 anglers fishing with me just below Las Molinos caught our limits to 28 pounds back while trolling chrome/chartreuse Flatfish," said Bogue. "The big fish of the day was fooled by Scott Waterworth from Pinole. I have found better action fishing during early morning when the fish are more active."

"Only about a dozen fish have been caught in the Colusa area since the opener, but they have been big ones," noted Pat Kittle of Kittle's Outdoors. "The best action seems to be in the Red Bluff area, where many boaters picked up their limits of salmon."

Big fish honors in the Colusa area go to Stub Kroepelin, who landed a whopper 45 pound chinook. The fish was taken pulling a Sacramento spinner while fishing near Wards Landing. Carl Pollachi also landed a monster 42 pounder while fishing a Sacramento spinner near the Colusa State Park.
