February is the month for the opening of three popular lakes in northern California, Lake Pardee near Ione, San Justo Reservoir near Hollister, and San Pablo Reservoir in El Sobrante.

Lake Pardee will open its gates at 9:00 a.m. on February 1, 2001 for camping and RV's. Fishing will not begin until 5:00 a.m. on Friday, February 2, 2001.

According to Pardee Marina Manager, Ralph Rose, the current water conditions look very good for the opening weekend. "With an abundance of fish being planted throughout the weekend, trout fishing should be at it's best," said Rose.

"For bank fisherman, I would recommend Power Bait, nightcrawlers, and small lures such as Kastmasters and Rooster Tails. Trollers should use small lures or crawlers behind hardware at 10 to 15 feet deep," added Rose.

The lake facilities are up and running and will be offering boat rentals for anglers. For more information, call (209) 772-1472.

San Justo Reservoir is set to kick off on February 3. In addition to rainbow trout, anglers can also pursue largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill in this Bureau of Reclamation Lake. Remember, the lake is only open to fishing Wednesday through Sunday. For more information, call (831) 638-3300.

February 16 is opening day for San Pablo Reservoir, one of the most popular Bay Area reservoirs to pursue trout, bass and other species. The water conditions looked O.K. at press time, but another big storm could blow it out.

According to Warren Simensen of That Dam Company, the lake is down about 20 feet, and is running pretty cold due to the recent rains. The reservoir will be planted with rainbow trout the week before the opening.

"We are expecting it to be a good year of fishing since the ending of last season was pretty slow," said Simensen. For more information, call (510) 223-1661.
