The Kokanee Derby at New Melones Lake on June 24 was a smash hit, according to Kokanee Power President Phil Johnson. "We had a total of 197 people, which is a 30% increase over last years participants."

Anglers walked away with prizes. First place winner, Jaysen McDaniel of Grass Valley, caught a 2.03 pound, 17-1/2 inch kokanee, and won a Scotty electric downrigger and $300 cash.

Second place winner, Gary Coe, caught 1.90 pound, 17-1/4 inch kokanee, and won $200 cash. Third place winner, James Butterfield, caught a 1.85 pound, 17-1/4 inch kokanee, and won $100 cash. Second place winner, Sue Brown, caught a 1.81 pound, 16-3/4 inch kokanee, and won $75 cash. Fifth place winner, Wayne Douma, caught a 1.81 pound, 16 inch kokanee, and won $50 cash. Sixth through fifteenth place received $30 cash.

There were 19 juniors that competed in the tournament, and 5 walked away with prizes. Jeremy Barbour received first place with his 1.77 pound, 16-1/2 inch kokanee and walked away with a trophy, custom rod, and an Abu Garcia reel.

Buster Brown received second place with his 1.58 pound, 15-1/2 inch kokanee. Robbie Bernard received third place with his 1.57 pound, 15-1/4 inch kokanee. Dillon Schulz received fourth place with his 1.54 pound, 15 inch kokanee. And Maxwell Tobeck received fifth place with his 1.52 pound, 15 inch kokanee. Second through fifth place received a trophy and a tackle box.

"Anglers caught other species of fish, but weren't able to enter them in the tournament," said Johnson. Robie Thorson from Eugene, Oregon, of R&K Spinners, caught a 3 pound, 22 inch rainbow trout while fishing in the tournament.

The funds raised from the tournament will be used to continue to promote kokanee fisheries in the state of California (the American River hatchery, San Joaquin River hatchery, and Silverado hatchery) with research and materials, according to Johnson.

The top 40 anglers of the New Melones and Don Pedro tournaments will qualify for the Tournament of Champions Fish Off being held next year at New Melones. Prizes will include a Hewes Craft 16.5 fish runner, 2 Scotty downriggers, Furuno LCD 6000, Luhr speed trolling indicator, and a galvanized trailer. Hewes Craft Manufacturer and Boat Country in Eskelon are sponsoring the event.

The next Kokanee Power tournament is scheduled for July 29 at Stampede.
