The 1st annual Fish Sniffer Online Trash Talkers Striper and Sturgeon derby is being held on November 17-19 in all Delta waters.

"The Fish Sniffer Trash Talkers consist of a core of 30 or so guys that get on the bulletin board on the Fish Sniffer web site and talk about their fishing trips. This derby gives them the opportunity to fish together, though the derby is open to anyone who wants to participate," said Derby Coordinator Barry Canevaro.

"Last year we had 38 people that participated in the sturgeon derby, but we didn't use any advertisement. This year we have been advertising some and are expecting around 100 people to participate," said Derby Coordinator Mike Guidry. Last year, David Maples of Santa Rosa won first prize and $400 with his 52 inch sturgeon.

The derby will begin at 12:01 in the morning on November 17 and ends at 2:00 in the afternoon on November 19. All entrants will launch from the Pittsburg City Launch Ramp and weigh in at the Dock Side Marina. The final weigh in will be at 2:00 in the afternoon on November 19. All Delta waters are open to fish during the derby.

The entry fee is $30 per person, and can be mailed in or paid at the ramp (See Derby Page for details). The first 100 entries will receive a special edition embroider hat. Ninety percent of the proceeds will go towards payback, and the other 10 percent will go to the Hal Bonslett Memorial Scholarship Fund.

First place for the biggest striper and the biggest sturgeon will each get $500. Second place will get $300, and third place will take $200. The other prizes will be based on the 100 entries.

The sponsors are the Fish Sniffer Magazine, City of Pittsburg, Fish Hookers Sportfishing, Dock Side Market, and P-Line. For information contact Barry Canevaro (916) 777-6498 or Mike Guidry (925) 634-8457.
