The Bluewater Network has announced that Mercury Marine has won its first ever "Excellence in Environmental Engineering Award" for its leadership and commitment towards protecting the marine environment.

Bluewater Network is a national member organization that focuses on reducing pollution and protecting wildlife. One major campaign that this organization has worked on is to reduce the emissions that come from outboard motors and jet skis.

"The EPA says that 150 million gallons of oil a year is put into the environment because 2 stroke engines dump 1/3 of their unburned fuel, which is extremely hazardous to fish and other aquatic wildlife," said Executive Director of Bluewater Network, Dr. Russell Long. According to Long, a recent study in Lake Tahoe showed that 2 stroke engines will reduce fish growth by up to 46 percent. Mercury Marine is the first in its industry to discontinue the sale of conventional 2 stroke engines, an engine that Long calls an environmental dinosaur, by 2006.

"Since George W. Buckley became president of Mercury Marine, the company has voluntarily pursued environmental standards both more aggressively and rapidly than called for by regulatory agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board," said Long. "They are making it very clear that they're working hard to protect the marine environment."

Mercury is demonstrating that by the fact that they have certified more ultra-low emissions, three-star engines, and set up an indoor test facility to reduce air, water, and noise pollution from its engines, according to Long. They have also volunteered to use California's eco-label on all of its engines in the US and Canada to provide boaters with important environmental information.

"For many years the industry has told us that eliminating the 2 stroke engine could not be done, but Mercury Marine has proven that to be wrong by eliminating their 2 stroke engines and expanding its line of 4 stroke engines," said Long. "This is a huge victory for the marine environment."

In return, Mercury is very pleased to receive the award. "We are proud to accept this award and endorsement from Russell Long, Executive Director, Bluewater Network," said George Buckley, Chairman and CEO of Brunswick Corporation.

Mercury expects to continue to maintain a leadership position in low-emission technology by continuing to invest heavily in new product development. "Our commitment to innovation will keep Mercury at the forefront of legislative and customer preference trends," said Buckley.
