Location And Size: Englebright Reservoir, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is located at an elevation of 527 feet off of Hwy 20 just west of Penn Valley, California.  The lake has a surface area of 815 acres with a shoreline of 24 miles that snakes 9 miles long above the dam. 

Seasons: Fishing is open year round for rainbow trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, largemouth bass, spotted bass, channel catfish, bluegill and other species. 

History: Englebright Dam, a concrete arch structure on the Yuba River in Yuba and Nevada counties that is 1,142 feet across and 260 feet high, was put into service in 1941 by the Army Corp of Engineers. The dam was constructed for the primary purpose of trapping sediment derived from hydraulic mining operations in the Yuba River watershed.

Hydraulic mining in the Sierra Nevada was halted in 1884 but resumed on a limited basis until the 1930s during the Great Depression under the regulation of the California Debris Commission. Although no hydraulic mining in the upper Yuba River watershed resumed after the construction of the dam, the historical mine sites continued to contribute sediment to the river.

Today, Englebright Lake is used primarily for recreation and hydropower.  A new flow bypass system was installed in 2006 by the Yuba County Water Agency and Mitchell Engineering so that river flow requirements can be met during shut-downs of the Narrows II Powerhouse at the base of the dam.

Boat launching and rentals: Boats can be launched at the Park Headquarters, or at Skippers Cove Marina, where boats can also be rented. You can then proceed up the lake to a campsite, or stay on a houseboat if you have rented one.

Camping: 100 developed boat-in sites only are available.
