San Luis Reservoir

Location: in the foothills of the western San Joaquin Valley near Pacheco Pass off Highway 152, eight miles west of I-5. 

Size: The main reservoir holds 2,027,840 acre-feet of water when full. The San Luis Joint-Use Complex serves the California State Water Project and federal Central Valley Project (CVP). The state capacity is currently 1,062,180 acre-feet, while the federal capacity is 965,660 acre-feet. The shoreline is 65 miles and the surface area is 12,250 acres. The lake is 274 feet at its deepest.

Boat ramps:  Concrete ramps are available at Dinosaur Pont and the Basalt area on San Luis and at the San Luis Creek area on O’Neill Forebay.

 

Boating Hours/Conditions: Boats are allowed on the water from sunrise until sunset. The strictly enforced boating pattern here is counter-clockwise. Wind warning lights are located at the Romero Visitor center, Quien Sabe Point and the Basalt entrance. When the winds reach 30 mph and red warning light flashers, GET OFF THE LAKE! Lodging and camping: Reservations are recommended for developed campsites at Basalt and San Luis Campgrounds on spring and summer weekends and holidays. Call (800) 444-7275. Two other campgrounds are available first come, first served.

The Basalt Campground: The 79 non-hookup sites each have a table, cupboard and a fire ring with a barbecue. Some sites can accommodate trailers and motor homes up to 30 feet. Water and restrooms with pay showers are nearby.

The San Luis Creek Area Campground: The 53 family sites have electric and water hook-ups and accommodates motor homes and trailers up to 30 feet. A sanitation station is nearby. To reserve the San Luis Creek Group Camp for up to 90 people, call (800) 444-7275. The shaded picnic areas have sandy beaches. Reserve picnic sites by calling (209) 826-1197.
