Carquinez Strait
Solano and Contra Costa Counties, California
The Strait is the first place, after California City in San Francisco Bay, where anglers can consistently catch salmon during the run. Salmon anglers can pursue their sport from July 16 throughout December 31 in the waters east of the Carquinez Strait Bridge (between Vallejo and Crockett). The hottest months for shore fishing are generally September and October, though fish can be taken throughout the season. Use Blue Fox, Ve-Ze, QMS, Mepps and other spinners at Dillon Point in Benicia State Park and First Street. Striped bass can be taken in the strait year round, but the best shore fishing is available in the summer and fall. Toss out bullheads, mudsuckers and shrimp baits off First Street. Dillon Beach and around the bridges. Trolling with Rat-L-Traps and Hair Raisers can also be very good throughout the strait. Starry Flounder appear to be on the rebound, though not anywhere near their historic numbers. Fish grass shrimp, pile worms and blood worms in the same areas where you fish for salmon and stripers. White Sturgeon fishing is best from a boat, though bank anglers catch fish also. The deep water around the bridges can be very good for sturgeon during the fall, winter and spring. Use eel, salmon roe and shrimp baits.
