Shasta Lake
Shasta County
Fishing Notes:
- Rainbow Trout - Troll Cripplures, Hum Dingers, Needlefish, Strike Kings and other lures for rainbows in the main body and river arms throughout the year. Adjust your depth according to the time of year; top line troll in the winter and spring and use downriggers and leadcore line in deep water in the summer and early fall. During the winter, shore fishing with Power Bait and nightcrawlers can be good from the dam and around the points of the reservoir.
- King Salmon - Can generally be found deeper than the rainbows. The larger fish congregate around the dam and mouth of Dry Creek. Troll with the same lures as for rainbows, as well as Koke-A-Nuts and other lures behind dodgers. Trolling with shad can also be very productive.
- Brown Trout - Fishing is most productive in the winter and spring. Troll large Rebels and Rapalas in the Sacramento, McCloud, Squaw and Pit arms, usually around trees and structure. Casting rainbow trout pattern plugs and swim baits is also worth a try.
- Spotted, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass The "spots" are the most abundant species of bass in Shasta. Fish plastic worms, swim baits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and top water lures. Some of the best fishing of the year can be found in the winter and spring, since spotted bass continue to feed actively when the water cools down and fishing for trout, salmon and other species of bass slows.
- Channel Catfish, Crappie and Bluegill also offer plenty of action for anglers fishing during the summer and fall.
