The first Team Open Bass Tournament for 2014 in the west has great weights and huge paybacks!
The biggest & richest Bass Team Open Tournament series in the western United States for 2014 concluded on Saturday February 8th, 2014. The event was the American Bass Lake Oroville Team Open, Presented by Lucas Oil. 39 teams from all over the west braved an epic storm on Lake Oroville in Northern California. Lake Oroville is one of the top tournaments lakes in the west. This event presented very different conditions. The severe western drought had Lake Oroville down 200 vertical feet. Only one launch ramp currently remains on this large western reservior. After an almost completely dry January, a huge storm was predicted to land right on top of this event, and it did. The rains started on Thursday during the second official pre-fish day. Travel to the launch ramp required crossing a flat that should have been more than a hundred feet below the serface this time of year. The flat quickly turned to mud just to add another challenge for the anglers. Many anglers that had planned to compete in this event from the Oregon, Idaho and Washington cancelled their plans due to travel concerns. The tournament days saw strong winds and rain, lots of it. The temps were cold but not frigid. This was a true test for the anglers.
A special thanks to Make Nicoletti of Mercury Marine. Mark was in attendance with the Mercury Service trailer to keep every Mercury powered team on the water!
The host marina was Bidwell Marina. The fantastaic facilities at Bidwell made this event great, even with the adverse weather conditions.
In the end, the fishing was good, but fish over 2.5 pounds were very tough to find. All but 2 of the teams weighed in at least one of the days. On day one with a top weight of 12.88 pounds for 5- bass. Mike & Bill Friend weighed the great bag anchored by a beautiful 4.15 pounder!
Day 2 was another brutal weather day on Lake Oroville. When the mud settled, nearly half of the teams weighed 18+ pound for the 2-day event, great job considering the conditions.
The day 1 totals
165 Bass Total Weight: 307.72 lbs Average weight for all fish: 1.86 lbs Big Fish: 4.15 lbs (Mike & Bill Friend)
The day 2 totals
144 Bass Total Weight: 273.57 lbs Average weight for all fish: 1.90 lbs Big Fish: 5.28 lbs (Adam Lee Young & John Bell)
