Anglers found superb lingcod and rockfish action as the groundfish season neared its end on December 31.
“We had a wonderful day of fishing off Point Sur on Sunday, December 22,” reported Carol Jones of Kahuna Sportfishing. “The 19 anglers aboard the boat landed limits of lingcod to 18 pounds and limits of vermillion, copper, yellowtail, blue, widow, starry and other rockfish. Everything, including shrimp flies, jigs and bars, worked for the lingcod and rockfish.”
Chris Arcoleo of Chris’ Fishing Trips reported excellent fishing also. The Checkmate ended up on Saturday, December 21 with 18 limits of lingcod and Dungeness crab and half-limits of rockfish. The Caroline loaded up with ¾ limits of rockfish, 11 lings and two crab/apiece for 11 anglers.
Sunday’s trip aboard the Check Mate returned with 21 limits of lingcod and Dungeness crab while the Caroline had ¾ limits of rockfish, 28 lingcod, and 3 crab/apiece for 16 fishermen. The boats jigged up live squid for the bottomfish.
“The rockfish were back on the bite today for anglers fishing from South Rock up to 5 Mile Beach,” said Todd Fraser of Bayside Marine in Santa Cruz on December 21. “The lingcod are being caught daily in 60-110 feet of water up the coast. The wind came down and there was no swell.”
“The crab fishing continues to be hit and miss. The surfperch fishing has been good near Manresa. There have been some striped bass caught near Pajaro and in Aptos near the river mouths. Steelhead fishing has been good on the San Lorenzo River for anglers using roe, Little Cleos, flies, and pink worms.”Back To Reports
