Fishing pressure has been very light, but that will all change when the Feather River opens to salmon fishing on July 16. Combined releases into the Feather River are currently 3,500 cfs, so this should draw increasing numbers of salmon into the system.
The season will be open from July 16 through December 16 in the section from 200 yards above Live Oak boat ramp to the mouth. The limit is two Chinook salmon here also.
Meanwhile, a few waders and drift boaters are hooking steelhead while using nightcrawlers, spinners and an array of flies in the low flow area of the Feather. Most fish range from 1 to 3 pounds, with a few larger fish from 3 to 6 pounds.
“The shad fishing is winding down,” said Bob Boucke of Johnson’s’ Bait and Tackle. “On my latest trip to the Shanghai Bend area, we caught and released just five fish. The best action now is below the outlet or in the lower Yuba.”
Boucke hasn’t heard any reports on stripers in the lower Feather lately. If you want to hook a striper, try tossing out top water lures including Rapalas, Zara Spooks and Pencil Poppers, early and late in the day in the Shanghai Bend and Star Bend areas.Back To Reports
