The Fish Sniffer - Anglers Pull In Limits Of Rockfish
Anglers Pull In Limits Of Rockfish

Species: Rockfish Lingcod
Location: Half Moon Bay,

The local rockfish season opened on June 1 from Pigeon Point south of Half Moon Bay to Point Arena, and the season couldn’t come quickly enough for party boats and private skiffs since salmon action has been spotty at best despite excellent ocean conditions.

Captain Bob Ingles on the Queen of Hearts out of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing also went rockfishing on the opener for 35 limits of bottomfish south of the harbor. With the salmon remaining on hold, most party boats will be targeting the relatively sure thing of bottomfishing.

Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat started working the local reefs off of Tunitas Creek on the rockfish opener for limits of rockfish. He had made an effort for salmon earlier in the week during the gusty wind conditions, and they settled for limits of Dungeness crab after not hooking a fish.

After nine consecutive days of northwest winds keeping the boats tied up at the harbor, Captain Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete went 15 miles west of the harbor on Saturday, May 31 to 37’30/122’50 to find outstanding salmon sign with rafts of shearwaters and Cassin’s auklets, feeding blue and humpback whales, mats of krill, and brown salmon water, but the salmon were difficult to come by.

They ended up with 6 salmon for 7 anglers out of the 15 to 17 hookups experienced with the best action coming in the afternoon. The following day, Baxter went to the same area for 5 more salmon.

Further north in Pacifica, striped bass have started to invade the local beaches, and a tight-lipped collection of surf casters are tossing hair raisers, top water lures, or metal spoons from the access locations
