Location: Bodega Bay,
(Bodega Bay) After a July that featured outstanding rockfish and lingcod action, but sporadic salmon fishing, big salmon moved into the Bodega area around August 1 and the action has been hot ever since.
Captain Tim Wong of NorCal Sportfishing Adventures took out a group of Fish Sniffer supporters on August 3 and they experienced incredible action. The six anglers landed 8 kings with two of the fish weighing in at over 30 pounds.
Wong’s trip the next day resulted in 4 big salmon along with a bonus thresher shark.
The salmon are currently spread from Tomales Point to 10 Mile Beach. Early in the morning 10 Mile has been hot. Later in the day the area around Bird and Elephant Rocks has been good.
Some anglers are hooking up while trolling rigged bait or hoochies, others score while mooching anchovies or herring rigged on barbless circle hooks.
If you tire of battling salmon the lingcod bite has been very good for anglers tossing metal bar jigs or mooching frozen mackerel just off the bottom.
For rockfish a variety of offerings are being used to subdue limits. The most popular option is a white shrimp fly teamed with a strip of squid. Another killer has been a 3 inch white Gulp! grub drifted just off the bottom on a 3 way live bait rig.
For a shot at larger rockfish and bonus lings tie up a live bait leader using a 6/0 hook and pin a 4 to 6 inch Gulp! or PowerBait grub on the hook. Keep this rig within 4 feet of the bottom.Back To Reports
