The wind was the big story over the past weekend, and even the protected waters of the San Joaquin River were influenced by the gusty breezes.
Big minus tides and the effects of the persistent wind muddied up the river’s waters, but the water clarity will improve with the smaller tides in the coming week. Experienced anglers are taking advantage of the accumulation of large striped bass, particularly in low light conditions, as the top water bite has taken off.
Jim Pickens of the Fishermen’s Friend in Lodi said, “We have received more striper reports from the San Joaquin side than the Sacramento side last week with the best locations are from Eddo’s all the way up through Sounding Board at Venice Island as the stripers are pushing bait fish up into the sloughs. Red/white and chartreuse continue to be the colors of choice for trolling, sardines and shad are the baits of choice for stripers.”
Kenji Nakagawa and Mike Bishop of Lodi caught and released stripers at 31 and 32 pounds on a recent evening trip into the San Joaquin with custom Delta Wood Bombers, a top water lure.
For largemouth bass, Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, reported an emerging top water bite with the Persuader Double Buzz Bait in black/red or chartreuse/white or the ima Big Stick in shad-patterns. Pringle has observed threadfin shad as large as 6-inches in the system, and the bass in the 4 to 7-pound range are chasing bait on the surface.
Brandon Gallegos of H and R Bait in Stockton reported schoolie stripers are in the San Joaquin as far south as Mossdale. Blue gill action remained solid with jumbo red worms or wax worms along Holland Tract, Whiskey Slough, Eight Mile Road, and Bacon Island Road. Crappie fishing has been slow.
