(South Lake Tahoe) Trollers sampling the clear waters of Lake Tahoe are battling both kokanee salmon up to 21 inches and mackinaw trout to 10 pounds.
“The kokanee fishing is solid, though not wide-open,” said Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy’s Sportfishing. “For the past several days, we landed limits and near-limits of kokandee. We’re catching 1 to 4 fish per day in the 18 to 21 inch class, while the rest are in the 14 inch range.”
Roccucci has found the top action while trolling Uncle Larry’s Tropical Tiger and Bloody Tiger spinners, tipped with white corn, and Pro-Troll Flashers at 50 to 85 feet deep off the South Shore in the Tahoe Keys Area.
“We’re catching a lot of salmon on morning and afternoon trips,” reported John Shearer of Tahoe Sportfishing. “The morning trips are definitely producing the top action – every boat has been coming back with limits on the morning trips. Most fish run 12 to 17 inches, but we’re seeing a few in the 3 to 3-1/2 lb. range. The kokanee are hitting Wedding Rings, tipped with white corn.”
When they concentrate on mackinaw, anglers have been landing limits of fish to 10 pounds while trolling minnows up to 200 feet deep off the North and West Shores.
Mickey Daniels of Mickey’s Big Mack Charters reported “fair” mackinaw fishing. “Today we ended up with 7 mackinaw to 5 pounds for 8 rods,” said Daniels. “We started out shallow, 150 feet, and then went to 425 feet off Cal Nevada. We trolled minnows and dodgers.”
Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters reported “very good” mackinaw fishing while trolling minnows behind dodgers off Sugar Pine and Dollar Points.
“The fish range from 3 to 12 pounds and average 5 to 8 pounds,” said St. Denis. “Our largest fish taken lately went 17 pounds. Our best depths are 150, 180 and 200 feet and we’re also bagging mackinaw while working the kokanee schools at mid-depths.”
