If you want to catch fish in the West Delta, catfish are a great bet. There are stripers and sturgeon in the mix too, but the bite for both species has been hit and miss at best.

For catfish, anglers are advised to soak standard offerings like clams, mackerel, ‘crawlers and cut anchovies in 10 to 20 feet of water. Target areas that feature current. The best fishing takes place early, late and after dark, but you can also catch them in the daylight hours.

The best striped bass action is taking place around the tide change. Trollers are scoring schoolie size fish that range from 14 to 22 inches. Bait anglers are catching keepers too, but they have to sort through lots of undersize bass to get a limit.

Trollers are pulling Yo-Zuri Crystal minnows in a variety of finishes in the Rio Vista area. Bait anglers are hooking stripers while fishing shad and anchovies near the Power Lines.

The occasional keeper sturgeon is being pulled out of the deep water below Pittsburg, but fishing pressure is very light. The top baits are roe and eel.

Smallmouth bass are on the prowl in the sloughs near Rio Vista. To hook them anglers are working surface poppers and crawfish pattern crankbaits. The average bass goes about 12 to 14 inches, but larger fish are mixed in.
