Catfish Offer Most Consistent Metro Area Action
Fishing for white and channel catfish will offer anglers the most consistent angling in the Sacramento metropolitan area until the salmon bite picks up.
Anglers jigging with live jumbo minnows in the Sacramento Deepwater Channel and the Port of Sacramento are picking up some catfish and an occasional striped bass, advised Jimmy Perez at Broadway Bait Rod & Gun.
Other good catfish destinations include the Sutter Bypass and Lisbon Slough in the Yolo Bypass. Use mackerel, sardines, clams and chicken livers for the channel cats.
“Boaters and bank anglers are hooking a few salmon here and there at Discovery Park, the Minnow Hole and Garcia Bend,” said Perez. “They are tossing out spinners and jigging with a variety of spoons. The fish go anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds.”
Mel Gillette at Elkhorn Outdoor Sports reported that boaters are picking up a few salmon while anchor fishing with Silvertron spinners and Kwikfish below the Highway 113 Bridge. “The best spinner colors are purple, blue, and green with purple beads,” he noted.
