(Redding) Salmon fishing on the Sacramento River in the stretch from Red Bluff to Redding is a good news, bad news proposition. The bad news is that there are not big numbers of fish in the river at this time.
The good news is that the fish that are in attendance are large and chrome bright. The average fish runs more than 15 pounds and 30’s have already been reported.
“The salmon fishing is fair to okay, but anglers that come out have a good chance of hooking some exceptional fish,” related Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’s Guide Service. “I fished with a single client today and he had a great time. He hooked and landed 3 salmon in the 15 to 20 pound class. Two came on T-55 Flatfish and one grabbed Pautzke cured roe rigged on a Trokar hook.”
“I took my daughter Kara out with me the other day and she caught a beautiful 32 pound king early in the morning on a T-55. With more and more fish showing up I think by the end of August we should see a strong upswing in the number of fish in the river,” related Bogue.
“Everyone wants salmon right now, but the trout fishing in the river is still great. We caught and quickly released an awesome 18 inch rainbow today that grabbed our Pautzke roe. When you get quality trout like that on a big glob of salmon roe, it makes you wonder what you could do if you were targeting trout,” said Bogue.
Fly fishing guides such as Jason Thatcher are hooking solid numbers of 2 to 4 pound trout while working a variety of caddis and mayfly imitating nymphs on long multi-fly leaders.
