Cold, Clear Water Made For Tough Salmon Fishing

Cold, clear conditions basically shut down salmon fishing in the Red Bluff area on the last week before the Sacramento River salmon closure on December 16.

The trout fishing is still fair to good, but with the frigid temperatures and wind that have plagued the region, few anglers are hitting the water.

“What is the report? The report is that I’m not fishing. It’s 31 degrees outside my house and the wind is blowing 30 miles per hour out of the north,” quipped Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’s Guide Service.

“Seriously, even when the conditions were better the fishing was still really tough. The water remains low and clear and very few late fall run fish are moving up the river in this area."

Jason Thatcher of JT Guide Service reported that the trout fishing is good on days when the conditions cooperate. Egg imitations, beads and nymphs are the way to go if you are a fly fishing enthusiast.
