Crabs And Sanddabs Will Replace Rockfish As Main Quarry

Species: Crabs Lingcod Rockfish
Location: Half Moon Bay,

Rockfishing remained excellent for boats willing to work the reefs south of the harbor with the best action taking place from San Gregorio to Pigeon Point, but limits of crab will require pulling more and more pots.

Sherry Ingles of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing said, “The Queen of Hearts finished our season with 24 limits of rockfish and 2 lingcod to 16 pounds on Sunday, December 22 after finding 19 limits of rockfish including a cabezon the previous day.”

The Queen of Hearts and Riptide will shut down sport fishing for the season, but they will take whale watching trips until the anticipated salmon opener in April. The shop will remain open 7 days per week during the winter.

On combination trips, Captain Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat took out 9 hardy anglers on Saturday, December 21 who were willing to head out in the projected 9 foot swell over 9 seconds, and they were rewarded with limits of rockfish at Pescadero before pulling pots for limits of crab. He took a crab-only trip on Sunday, and he said, “We had to run a number of pots for limits since there are more and more shorts and females in the pots.”

He will continue to take combination trips until the rockfish closure on December 31 before transitioning to crab-only, sanddab/crab, or Humboldt squid/crab combinations if the cephalopods decide to show up in the canyons.

Further up the coast in Pacifica, Sheryl Jimno of the Rusty Hook reported striper fishermen are taking about action at Ocean Beach or Linda Mar with both lures and bait working. Crabbing from the pier remains productive enough to keep the walkways loaded with fishermen on the weekends, and snares loaded with squid, sardines, or anchovies remain the top technique for the crustaceans.
